TOP STORY OF THE DAY
New Delhi peeved over defunct SRTC, losses touch sky height
54 percent fleet inoperative
10/16/2014 11:57:11 PM
Syed Junaid Hashmi JAMMU, Oct 16: Defunct State Road Transport Corporation (SRCTC) of Jammu and Kashmir is not only a loss making corporation but one of the worst in the country which has just 46 percent of the available fleet of vehicles operational. 54 percent vehicles belonging to SRTC are not operational. Even this 46 percent fleet of vehicles is not completely operational. SRTC generates most of its revenue by ferrying Army, BSF, CRPF and Police. Annual durbar move too brings in revenue to the otherwise loss making corporation, whose revival continues to be a pipe dream. 50 percent of the operational fleet is over-aged. This 50 percent puts the number of operational vehicles at 329 of the total 704. These spine chilling facts have been brought to light by Transport Research Wing of Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in its performance review report of the State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC). The report maintains that SRTC has 704 vehicles, of which 329 are functional and remaining, 375 are operated once in a year and that too, during the Durbar move. J&K SRTC...

State Govt fails to comply SC's ban on manual scavenging
Over 150 still engaged in sub human labour
10/16/2014 11:56:59 PM
Avinash Azad JAMMU, Oct 16: Failing to take cognizance of the awful practice of manual scavenging and blatantly disregarding Apex court guidelines in this regard, J&K Government has not been able to relieve over 150 people who are still engaged in appalling form of labour to meet their ends meet. "Practice of manual scavenging, arising from the continuing existence of insanitary latrines, still persists in various parts of the state. The existing laws in state seem futile to eradicate the in-human source of livelihood of some families, mostly outsiders", said sources in the Government. "As per census 2011, an alarming 160804 households out of the total 1497920 households in rural areas a...

Board for Development of Pahari Speaking People defies pluralistic ethos
'Secular' body has only 7 out of 76 employees from minority community
10/16/2014 11:56:17 PM
Kunal Shrivatsa JAMMU, Oct 16: Notwithstanding tall claims of the State Government that it treats every community, religion and region with equal fairness, the minorities are still at receiving end in Jammu and Kashmir-the only Muslim majority state of India. In a glaring example of discrimination with minorities in J&K, the State Advisory Board for the Development of Pahari Speaking People has only seven Hindu employees out of its total strength of 76 employed in nine hostels functioning in different locations of the state which were established to provide accommodation to the Pahari speaking students. The neglect of the candidates from minority community is against the very essence and ...

Did bureaucrats mislead Flood Control Minister?
10/16/2014 11:55:50 PM
Sandeep Bhat Jammu, Oct 16 : The recent flash floods across the state and in valley in particular has devastated life and property. The government's unpreparedness to manage the floods added insult to peoples' injury. The devastation caused by the floods is being debated and the Government is blamed for what happened. In a recent statement, Flood Control Minister Sham Lal Sharma said that bureaucrats informed him that floods will never occur in Srinagar city. Was he misled by the bureaucrats? "Some bureaucrats called me urging not to panic the locals as floods would never occur in Srinagar, instead Sharma told them that the situation is indeed alarming as the waters have crossed th...

Asif Iqbal Naik Kishtwar, Oct 16 : Even after fourteen months of the communal clash that broke out in Kishtwar town on August 9, 2013, and claimed the lives of three persons, besides causing massive damages to public and government property, the riot victims not only cry foul in terms of release of compensation as was promised to them by the Omar Abdullah-led coalition government, but those who lost their family members also feel betrayed as the government has failed to provide them jobs under SRO-43 as was promised to them by none other than the Chief Minister himself. Danish Bashir Moochi, who lost his father in the Kishtwar violence, is running from pillar to post to get himself absorb...

ISIS butchers in Kashmir
10/16/2014 11:55:24 PM
Neha JAMMU, Oct 16: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is at the receiving end because he on October 14 played down the establishment of some ISIS foothold and waving of the ISIS flags in Srinagar. Almost the entire national media, print and electronic, is lambasting Omar Abdullah for his irresponsible statements on the issue and warning him that it was the similar official indifferent and callous approach to the separatist-related activities in the late 1980 in Kashmir which directly and indirectly helped a handful of separatists to play havoc with the Valley and rid it of almost all the non-believers. Many serious political parties too have expressed grave concern over the development of porte...

PDP's right advice to separatists
Forget K issue
10/16/2014 11:55:10 PM
Rustam JAMMU, Oct 16: The main opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday did well to question the separatists' activities aimed at keeping the Kashmir pot boiling in this time of tragedy caused by the flood fury and advise it to become responsible recognizing the fact that the extraordinary situation caused by the September floods required extraordinary efforts to rebuild the devastated area, including parts of Srinagar city and Jammu province. It was the former Deputy Chief Minister MP Muzaffar Husain Beig who took the initiative to tell the separatists that it was not time to rake up (the so-called) Kashmir issue but to extend their helping hand so that the hardships of the...
