First time in 33 years, polls held without boycott call from Pak stooges

Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 28: As District Development Council polls were held on Saturday amid the large number of people exercising their franchise, history was subtly in the making. For the first time, there was no election boycott call since the outbreak of militancy in Kashmir Ever since the polls were held after the Assembly elections of 1987, the separatists and Pakistan stooges in Kashmir used to issue a stringent boycott call, warning people not to vote. Till last year, the boycott call for each and every election in Kashmir used to remain as a hallmark of separatist groups in toto. However, a tectonic shift in separatist politics is being witnessed in an otherwise strife torn Kashmir valley with no boycott call issued for the first time in the last 33 years. “It is a welcome sign that the separatists have finally realised that the calls in no way fructify and yield no results. It was a historic day for the West Pakistani Refugees (WPRs) as they first time cast votes in the local body elections. Earlier they were eligible only for casting votes in Lok Sabha elections due to Article 370. West Pakistan refugees were settled mainly in border areas of Jammu and were not considered as permanent citizens.
