J&K election date, ECI's prerogative, says Home Ministry

Agencies New Delhi, July 19: The decision to schedule elections in Jammu and Kashmir is a prerogative of the Election Commission of India, the Home Ministry said on Tuesday. In response to a written question about when the situation in Kashmir would be brought to normal so that democratic process can be started in the Valley, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said, "The decision to schedule elections is the prerogative of Election Commission of India." While stating that the number of terror incidents in J&K have come down, the minister said the Government had constituted a delimitation Commission, which has notified Orders on March 14, 2022 and May 5, 2022 on delimitation of Parliamentary and Legislative Assembly Constituencies of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. He said number of terror incidents have gone down and there were 473 incidents terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir in 2021-22, the Home Ministry said. Agencies New Delhi, July 19: Over 29,000 recruitments have been done in the government sector in Jammu and Kashmir since 2019, Home Ministry said on Tuesday. In a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said while district-wise information on employment rate in Jammu and Kashmir is not available, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has carried out recruitment in the public sector from the year 2019 onwards totaling 29,806. In addition, employment for 5.2 lakh persons is estimated to have been created through self-employment schemes from August 2019 upto June 2022, the Minster said. 819 suicide incidents reported in armed forces during 5 yrs: Defence Ministry

Agencies New Delhi, July 19: A total of 819 armed forces personnel died by suicide in the last five years, with the Army reporting a maximum of 642 such cases, according to details provided by the government. In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt has said the Indian Air Force reported 148 cases of suicide in the said period, while the number in the Indian Navy was 29. The minister's reply on Monday came following a question on the number of servicemen and ex-servicemen who committed suicide in the last five years. Army disability pension only if injury linked to service: Supreme Court

Agencies New Delhi, July 19: The Supreme Court has said army personnel will be entitled to disability pension only if the disability is attributable to military service or was aggravated by such service and if such condition is more than 20 per cent. A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and MM Sundresh was hearing an appeal filed by the Centre challenging an order of the Armed Forces Tribunal which granted disability pension to army personnel. Covid cases on rise, mask mandate reimposed in 3 districts

Early Times Report Srinagar, July 19: Amid a spike in Covid cases, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has made face masks mandatory in three districts of the Union Territory, officials said on Tuesday. The number for active Covid cases, which had dropped to just below 50 towards the end of May, rose to nearly 1,200 on Monday. While Srinagar has 390 active cases, Jammu has 519.
