Jammu, July 26: Literacy is at the heart of basic education for all. Basic literacy is essential for eradicating poverty, reducing child morality, curbing population growth, achieving gender equality and ensuring sustainable development, peace and democracy.
Universal literacy also has special significance for those who have been historically deprived of access to education. In fact education is a lifelong learning perspective not only to enhance reading and writing capabilities, but also to impart a comprehensive set of life skills that enables people to access all development resources. As per the data available with the early times and ESI, the literacy rate at the time of independence in the state of Jammu and Kashmir was only five percent. Census 1961 put the literacy rate at 11.03% which increased to 18.58% during 1971 census

BARAMULLA, July 26: A policeman was killed and four others including an Inspector of Special Operation Group sustained injuries after militants opened heavy fire upon them in North Kashmir's volatile town of Sopore, during the intervening night of July 25-26.
According to official sources, the incident took place at around 2:30 am (during intervening night of July 25-26) when the Special Operation Group (SOG) of police while chasing a group of alleged stone pelters at Chota Bazar(fish Market) near Jamia Masjid were fired upon.

POONCH, July 26 : The mastermind of IED blast, that on June 24 last destroyed Naib-Tehsildar's office at Dhargloon in Balakote area here, who had escaped from the custody of Gursai police in Kashmir a few days back, was today rearrested by police from a valley area.
