Agencies New Delhi, Aug 5: Union Home Minister Amit Shah met a long-held promise of the Bharatiya Janata Party Monday when he moved a resolution in the Rajya Sabha that Article 370, which allowed Jammu and Kashmir its own Constitution, will no longer be applicable. "The President on the recommendation of Parliament is pleased to declare as from 5th of August 2019, all clauses of the said Article 370 shall cease to be operative... ," the resolution stated. Shah also moved a bill proposing bifurcation of the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories -- Jammu and Kashmir division and Ladakh. Agencies New Delhi, Aug 5: The bill to reorganise Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories sailed through Rajya Sabha today, with several opposition parties walking out, bringing down the majority mark, and others siding with the government, which does not enjoy majority in the upper house. Among those that sided with government were Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party, Naveen Patnaik's Biju Janata Dal, Jagan Reddy's YSR Congress, N Chandrababu Naidu's Telugu Desam Party and in a surprise addition -- Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party. Agencies New Delhi, Aug 5: Union home minister Amit Shah, who announced the government's plans to end Jammu and Kashmir's statehood this morning, held out some hope in the evening that it might be restored one day, after it becomes the country's most developed area. The government is pushing through a bill to "reorganize" Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories - Ladakh without any legislature and Jammu and Kashmir with one. Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 5: Former chief minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti was arrested moments after Rajya Sabha passed the bill to bifurcate the state into two Union territories. The government had earlier revoked the state's special status, provided under Article 370, via presidential order. National Conference leader Omar Abdullah has also been arrested. Mehbooba Mufti has been taken to Hari Niwas - a VVIP state guest house. She was put under house arrest last night as the authorities clamped restrictions under Section 144 of CrPC. Decision in this regard was taken by the higher up of the administration after reviewing Monday's situation. Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 5: The Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir will have a Lieutenant-Governor and the maximum strength of its Assembly will be of 107 seats which will be further enhanced to 114 after a delimitation exercise, according to a Bill introduced in Parliament on Monday. The current effective strength of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly is 87, including four seats falling in Ladakh region, which will now be a separate UT without a legislature. Agencies New Delhi, Aug 5: President Ram Nath Kovind in "concurrence" with the "Jammu and Kashmir government" promulgated Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Order, 2019 on Monday which states that provisions of the Indian Constitution are applicable in the state. The president issued Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Order, 2019 which comes into force "at once", and shall "supersede the Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Order, 1954". "All the provisions of the Constitution" shall apply in relation to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, it said.
