| Several patients continuously on ventilators for years | | GMC ventilators ventilate despite Controversies! | | Abodh Sharma
JAMMU, Jan 24: Beyond controversies, complaints, RTI queries and even litigations with regards to availability of ventilators in the Government Medical College Hospital in Jammu, what has conveniently been overlooked is the fact that there are several patients who have continued to be on ventilator support for years, not only keeping the critical life support machines engaged but also availing unremitting critical patient care in the intensive care unit of the hospital.
Sources in the hospital divulge that on the hind side of controversies and RTI queries many of them raised by vested interests, GMCH has done fairly well in the upkeep and maintenance of not only the ventilator machines but the critical care that goes with them in terms of services of doctors and para medical staff. "While Back to back RTI queries have been filed over availability of ventilators, majority of the ventilators in the ICU are working 24x7," said a senior doctors of the hospital, visibly moved by the attempt to project the working of the ICU in poor light through repeated RTI queries.
Presently, there are eight ventilators in the ICU of the GMCH, one of which has been reserved for the VIP patients like CM or Governor and all of them are in working condition. At least three patients have been on ventilators from one to three years and uninterrupted services have been maintained for them through day and night. These include Dharam Pal Singh, S/O Faqir Chand, R/O Trikuta Nagar, admitted since February 4, 2011; Devi Sharma, W/O DK Sharma, R/O Resham Ghar Colony, admitted since August 20, 2012 and Chanchala Devi, W/O Sham Lal, R/O Akhnoor, admitted since July 26, 2013.
"Ventilators are sophisticated machines which are procured by the Hospital from the companies based outside the state. Like any other machine, they can also develop snags and since the engineers who specialize in their repairs have to come from places like Delhi and Chandigarh, there may be procedural and human delays in their restoration in working condition," argued a senior doctor in hospital administration pleading anonymity.
Meanwhile, besides a regular ICU that works under the Department of Anesthesiology, a parallel ICU has been set up on the second floor of the GMCH, with a view to provide ventilator support the patients brought in the hospital Emergency. While eight of the 10 ventilators are working in this unit too, doctors are divided on the initiative of setting up of this unit. "This has deprived the Emergency of the resuscitation unit that earlier existed within the Emergency and the patient that needs breathing support now has to be supported on ambu till he/she is put on the regular ventilator which always involves a risk to his/her life," said another doctor adding that the parallel ICU has become a nobody's baby. |
