JURSEA elections in Jammu University

Sukhdev elected new President

Syed Junaid Hashmi

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Nov 17: In what could be termed as major embarrassment to BJP and its supporters in Jammu University, a little know student organization National Secular Forum (NSF) convincingly outwitted candidates put up by its youth wing Akhil Bharti Vidhyarthi Parsihad (ABVP) in the keenly contested elections for Jammu University Research Scholars Executive Association (JURSEA).
In the high stakes election in which even President of Jammu University Teachers Association (JUTA) Prof. Dalip Singh, Head of the Mathematics Department campaigned for ABVP supported candidate, Sukhdev Singh, who is research scholar of Urdu department won the election for the post of President of JURSEA by a margin of 6 votes. He defeated his nearest rival and ABVP candidate Lokvinder Singh, a research scholar of Geography Department.
Not only Sukhdev Singh but his entire team barring one member won elections of JURSEA convincingly. Jyoti Bala of Sanskrit department won the elections for the post of Vice-President by a solitary vote from the ABVP candidate. Sunny Babbar defeated ABVP candidate Kulveer Singh by 4 votes for the post of General Secretary. Manzoor Ahmed defeated ABVP candidate by 4 votes for the post of Joint Secretary. For the post of Organizing Secretary, there was tie between Syed Shehna and one Dalip Singh. Both had got 16 votes each.
A draw of lots was held in which Dalip Singh was declared winner. For the post of treasurer, Gopal Singh defeated Varun Salathia of ABVP by 2 votes. The new President of JURESA Sukhdev Singh is also Provincial President of National Secular Forum (NSF). Sukhdev secured 17 votes while Lokvinder managed just 11 votes of total 32 registered votes. How high the stakes were could be gauged from the fact that BJP had put both men and machinery on work to ensure victory of its youth wing candidate.
From invoking 'Modi for JU' slogan to sending messages containing content which included 'Common cause for defeating anti-nationals', BJP supporters and friends in Jammu University did all they could do to ensure victory of Lokvinder. But the results brought doom for all of them. They had been openly predicting massive victory of ABVP and had even started frequenting the office of acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. R.D.Sharma and his Special Secretary Jai Kumar Sharma with requests to allow them to hold a massive victory march after the announcement of results of the JURSEA elections.
If the University sources are to be believed, ABVP had started canvassing for this high profile election more than two months ago. They would regularly hold meetings in the laws of University, planning and preparing for these elections. Intent, according to sources was to sow the seeds of BJP in Jammu University, which has more often witnessed neutral candidates winning the JURSEA elections.
Defeat came to ABVP candidate Lokvinder and his entire team despite JUTA President Prof. Dalip Singh alongwith State President of ABVP Dr. Varinder Koundal extensively campaigning for them. Koundal is Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics. Besides, he is also General Secretary of JUTA. Prof. Narinder Singh and Dr. Nirmal Singh, both of whom are associated with BJP too campaigned for the candidates put up by ABVP from behind.
If University scholars are to be believed, authorities associated with the election process allegedly tried to help ABVP team in winning the elections but all efforts bore no fruit. The election authorities did all to manipulate the process of voting, alleged the NSF but failed to prevent NSF from winning the elections. After being elected, Sukhdev said that his victory is a sign of the things to come. "They tried to polarize the atmosphere but failed. They tried to arm twist the election process of the JURSEA by roping in outsiders but failed. We have won convincingly," said Sukhdev.
General Secretary Sunny Babbar on being asked complimented NSF for keeping secular ethos of Jammu alive alongside fighting for the rights of students. "We would do all for our scholars who have voted or not voted for us," added Babbar.
