SRINAGAR, Nov 17: Panic gripped the Gupkar area here in the summer capital after some gun shots were heard near the official residence of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah early in the morning today. The shots were fired by a Border Security Force (BSF) personnel posted at the Omar's residence.
Reports said that people living in the vicinity of the Gupkar area got frightened in the morning after they heard some of the gun shots. The locals apprehended that the CM's residence has come under a militant attack. However, the things became clear only when it got known that a BSF jawan has fired some shots from his service rifle.
The BSF higher ups took immediate action in order to stop occurrence of any further incident. As soon as the firing stopped the BSF jawan was encircled by his colleagues and he was disarmed.
He was taken away by the BSF personnel where he is being interrogated for his act in a highly fortified area. The situation turned normal in the area after some time with people heaving sigh of relief.
Sources said that BSF personnel who fired outside the Omar's residence is not mentally stable and has been going through some stress over some period of time. He fired at least 10 rounds from his service rifle.
However no one was injured in the incident since all the gun shots were fired in the air. The gun shots virtually rattled the eerie calm of the high security Gupkar area and also the adjoining areas.
At the time of the firing incident Omar was not present at his official residence. He was in New Delhi and later tweeted about the incident. He in the tweet said that he is quite confidence about his security set up adding that the security officials are professional in their own right.
Today's firing incident assumes significance since the polls for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly are few days away.
The first phase of elections is going to be held on November 25 with the fifth and final phase to be conducted on December 20.
The counting of votes would be taken on December 23 across the state.
