Early Times Report

JAMMU, Nov 17: It is difficult to say if Peoples Conference (PC) chairman Sajjad Lone has discarded the pernicious idea of "achievable nationhood" or he has really entered the mainstream politics arena pining full faith in the Indian Constitution and the unity and territorial integrity of India. Difficult because he himself has created a doubt by saying that ideology will not be allowed to come in the way of development. "The ideological impediment will not be allowed to impact development. We are a backward area with poverty punctuating lives of people, we need development," he had on Sunday said. It was not an insignificant statement. It did convey some message and our intelligence agencies must have taken note of it. It is also difficult to say if Sajjad Lone has turned secular or if he has recognized the fact that Kashmir doesn't constitute the entire State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh and that the State consists of three distinct regions of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh housing a highly diverse population. Difficult because he is on record having said in his "Achievable Nationhood" that majority view must prevail, as also difficult because his "Achievable Nationhood" only talks about Kashmir, Kashmiris and their sectarian aspirations. This precisely is also the view of all Kashmiri separatists and so-called mainstream Valley-based leaders like Omar Abdullah.
However, it can be said that Sajjad Lone, who is making a serious effort to become an important factor in the J&K Legislative Assembly, is not appreciative of the separatists in Kashmir. Sajjad had also contested the Lok Sabha election in 2009, but lost it. So much so, he had forfeited his security deposit. Nit just this, he didn't lead even in that Assembly segment which his father Abdul Gani Lone represented for many years. This time, he is contesting the Assembly election in a big way and has fielded many candidates in Kashmir, especially what the Kashmiris call North Kashmir. Only time will tell if he makes a mark or not, but it cannot be denied that he is putting in all efforts to capture a few seats in the Assembly. It is, however, important to note that he has made some noises which do indicate his disliking for Kashmiri separatists. Only the other day, he said that the separatists are treading a path that would lead them nowhere and that they are stagnating and singing the same old monotonous song no one is prepared to listen. He also said, and very rightly, that those who are not dynamic are doomed to a mischievous failure. Sajjad Lone, in fact, made several statements, which suggested that Kashmiri separatists have nothing new to offer to the people, that the times have changed and that those who go against the wind only become irrelevant. "There is something called dynamism, which requires a change with time. Separatists are stagnating. They are singing the same theory which they did in the 1950s. Either they have not woken up to the new challenges and times or they refused to do so. Once there is a change with time, the out-of-the-box solution will come up automatically," he was quoted as saying on Sunday. What Sajjad said was nothing but a veiled attack on separatists like Syed Ali Shah Geelani and others of his ilk, who had been preaching something for years but without achieving anything. However, his critics have said that Sajjad Lone has become a tool of New Delhi and that he is bartering the interests of Kashmir for the sake of personal power and profit. His critics have also claimed that Sajjad Lone spoilt his chances by openly hobnobbing with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP, saying those who hobnob with the BJP have no place in Kashmir. Whatever the case, Kashmir valley is witnessing some important political developments and this Assembly election is very important for the future of J&K.
