SRINAGAR, Nov 17: Former trusted lieutenants and close aides of National Conference president, Dr. Farooq Abdullah are all set to spoil the party for party candidate Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar in the Ganderbal constituency in Central Kashmir.
Dr. Abdullah's close aides and friends like Ghulam Ahmad Saloora, Sheikh Ghulam Rasool and Mohammad Yousuf Bhat are all set to eat into the voting share of NC candidate in the election going to be held on November 25. While two of the trusted lieutenants of Dr. Abdullah are in fray for the Ganderbal seat, the third one has recently joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Over the years the trio has been working for the interests of National Conference and the party candidates who have stood for the Assembly constituency and also for the Srinagar Parliamentary seat. These people worked hard while ensuring the victory of Dr. Abdullah in Assembly elections and Parliamentary election ever since he jumped into the electoral fray.
Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah who is the working president of National Conference also owes his success in 2008 Assembly elections to the trio since they worked hard for it. Even though Omar has been referring to these people as 'dead wood' he in his heart of hearts knows it fully well that he could not won without the support of the trio.
Saloora parted ways with National Conference after feeling 'suffocated' under the leadership of Omar and launched his own party titled 'Awami Insaaf Party'. He is fighting the upcoming Assembly election from Ganderbal and hopes to get a good vote share. His candidature would mean that Ishfaq would be deprived of the votes that were due to him had Saloora not left NC.
Bhat who shot to limelight during the Haji Yusuf case also left National Conference after he was not given the berth in Upper House of Legislature despite paying money to the party higher ups as alleged by him. As soon as he left NC the Congress party was able to catch hold of him and Bhat joined the Congress party. He is the Congress party's candidate from the Ganderbal constituency this time around.
A former Chief Secretary, Sheikh Ghulam Rasool recently left National Conference and joined People’s Democratic Party. He accused the NC working president of trampling over the ideals and principles of the party while adopting his own way. He said that Omar has no respect to the people who offered everything to the party without caring for their own self.
The exit of this trio from National Conference has put the party candidate for Ganderbal constituency in a quandary. One is forced to think that Ishfaq has been made the scapegoat in this whole affair. Had these three people been with NC, Omar would have never given up the Ganderbal seat and flee to a far place like Beerwah in Budgam district.
Omar who had tasted defeat in 2002 Assembly elections from Ganderbal against Qazi Mohammad Afzal of PDP fully knows that he has got no chance to retain his seat since his father's close friends and aides have parted ways with National Conference. It is due to this reason only that Omar has decided to fight elections from Beerwah and Sonwar Assembly segments.
