SRINAGAR, Mar 5: Flouting all norms of propriety, several bureaucrats and politicians have converted guest houses of the state into their holiday homes for their families, while those who are in winter capital for discharge of their professional duties are facing untold miseries.
According to details available with Early Times, majority of the guest houses situated at prime locations in Jammu are occupied by the families and relatives of bureaucrats and politicians despite the fact that many of them have been also been provided with the official accommodation.
Official sources disclosed that prime rooms of the majority of the guest houses were occupied by bureaucrats and politicians soon after the winter vacations were declared in winter zones of Kashmir and Jammu province, adding that these populous preferred ones are not paying any rent against the facilities availed by them, thereby pinching the exchequer.
Guest houses have been constructed to accommodate visiting officials, politicians, prominent citizens, journalists, tourists and pilgrims visiting the city for limited period, while at the same time the government offered concessional rates to various politicians and journalists in these guest houses, but they are illegally occupied by the families of the influential for prolonged periods.
"Many journalists who arrived in the winter capital to cover the oath ceremony of the new government have been struck due to closure of the national highway, but they are facing hardships as no accommodation is available to them in any of the guest houses in Jammu" said a scribe.
Sources revealed that many officials were occupying these guest houses for years and even withdrawing TA/DA from the government in violation of financial code."Many of them even indulge in immoral activities inside these guest houses, but no one dares speak against them due to their clout" said an employee of one such guest house.
They said that similar practice is going on in summer capital, particularly during peak tourism season. Sources said that the department in many cases increased the rates of these guest houses several folds so that same could remain beyond the reach of common man and they can easily accommodate their kith and kins in these guest houses free of cost according to their own will. Many politicians including MLAs/MLCs who have been allocated government accommodations in MLA Hostels at Jammu and Srinagar are also using these guest houses, while the accommodations provided to them inside MLA Hostels is being enjoyed by their party workers or by their close aides in total violation of rules and regulations. The onus is now on new government in the state to act against these erring bureaucrats who are misusing government property, beside causing huge losses to state exchequer.
