Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Apr 5: Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir has virtually been 'disempowered' by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government that assumed charge on Monday under the leadership of PDP President, Mehbooba Mufti.
The summer capital has almost been turned into representation less in the new government since only one city based legislator has made it to the council of ministers. The minister too has been turned 'irrelevant' since she is a Minister of State (MoS) while having to work under orders of the senior 'boss'. Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Hazratbal constituency Asiya Naqash took oath as MoS on Monday with no other legislator from Srinagar making it to the council of ministers. It seems that PDP which has five legislators from the summer capital district of the state has decided to play 'prank' with the city residents by not giving due representation to the city based legislators in the council of ministers.
It would be in place to mention here that in the government headed by PDP Patron Late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Srinagar got due representation in the council of ministers. While MLA Amira Kadal, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari was a cabinet minister holding the Roads & Buildings (R&B) department in the previous dispensation, MLA Sonwar, Mohammad Ashraf Mir and MLA Hazratbal, Asiya Naqash were the Ministers of State in the Mufti led state government.
This time around the city based legislators have been shown the 'exit' door by the new chief minister and it remains to be seen whether any of them would make it to council of ministers as and when and if the expansion of cabinet takes place. The under-performance of Mir and the 'coup' by Bukhari came up as reasons for their exit from the present council of ministers headed by Mehbooba.
Pertinently, first time in the history of Jammu & Kashmir assembly elections, PDP win five seats from the summer capital district of Srinagar in 2014 assembly elections. The PDP won Amira Kadal, Sonwar, Zadibal, Batmaloo and Hazratbal constituencies in the last assembly elections. Bukhari, Mir, Moulvi Abid Ansari, Noor Mohammad Sheikh and Asiya won from these seats. The remaining three seats of the Srinagar district were won by National Conference. NC candidates emerged victorious from Khanyar, Eidgah and Habba Kadal assembly segments. Ali Mohammad Sagar, Mubarak Gul and Shameema Firdous got elected from these constituencies on the ticket of National Conference.
PDP's decision of not giving 'due' representation to Srinagar in the government may cause problems for the party in the next assembly elections. The city residents had pinned their hopes on the new dispensation especially after they suffered huge losses in the September 2014 deluge. However, the latest move by PDP is all set to act as a setback to the residents of summer capital of the state.
