| BSF may replace CRPF; bunkers to come up at strategic locations | | Kashmir returns to 1990-like situation? | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 29: Taking a strong note of attack on the convoy of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at Pampore on Jammu-Srinagar highway last week, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is mulling to replace paramilitary CRPF with Border Security Force (BSF) in volatile areas across Kashmir.
Sources told Early Times the MHA has directed all the security agencies to submit a detailed report about the measures and steps which could be taken to prevent militants from carrying out major strikes in volatile Kashmir Valley. "One of the proposals which is making rounds is replacing the CRPF with BSF. The CRPF is basically a Police force which is trained to tackle law and order situation, while as BSF is a trained force which can handle insurgency related incidents and can prove lethal for the militants," said a source.
He said, "Besides replacing CRPF in volatile areas, another proposal which is making rounds is to once again set up concrete bunkers of the security forces in the areas which are turning out to be the hot bed of militancy. Absence of bunkers is proving to be handy for the militants and this cannot be allowed."
It is in place to mention here that many bunkers were dismantled in Kashmir after the Valley based political parties raised the bogey of demilitarization to appease the then military ruler of Pakistan General Pervez Musharraf, who was ousted from power in Pakistan after the unrest in his country against his dictatorial policies.
Even the Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday acknowledged that recent attacks on security forces are no law and order problem but a proxy war from across the border.
"We are in touch with the Centre over the matter. We want to ensure a peaceful and incident-free Amarnath Yatra and tourist season," senior BJP minister informed the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday. He assured the House that all the possible steps would be taken to thwart the militant attacks in future.
Sources said that MHA is also mulling to launch a counter insurgency operation across Kashmir in a big way and strategies are being framed to launch a counter offensive to neutralize the militants and their sympathizers present in the Valley. "Army and other security forces have been asked to get ready to carry out the strikes at the militant hideouts. While Police have been asked to launch a crackdown against the sympathizers of militants and separatists," they added.
Sources claimed that initial investigations in Pampore attack have revealed that two Pakistani militants killed in the retaliatory action had taken refuge inside a house near the encounter site. "Militants have changed their strategy and instead of attacking the camps they are targeting the patrols of the security forces and their convoys. They are seeking the support of locals to carry out these deadly attacks. Steps are being taken to ensure that militants don't take refuge inside the residential areas as Police have launched a survey to find out the details of tenants putting up in different areas. People in coming days would be asked to inform the local police about the guests present in their premises, " they added. |
