Early Times Report

Jammu, July 10: Blame it on the utter lack of indifference of the Sports Council authorities towards hundreds of players who train in the multipurpose hall of the MA Stadium here, the place is without electricity for over a fortnight and those at the helm of affairs are watching like lame ducks.
Sources disclosed that over one hundred registered players in Badminton and Gymnastics which include national medalists, brave threat of injury and train under pitch darkness each day, hoping that the power shall be restored, but incapable Sports Council officers have dashed their hopes and failed to get the fault addressed despite the lapse of over a fortnight.
"Hundreds of players who practice here have paid advance fee amounting to thousands of rupees to the Council authorities and they are duty bound to ensure that the basic playing facilities are provided to the players, but it is deplorable that the concerned officers of the Council have done nothing to restore power" said a veteran Badminton player, questioning the complete lack of accountability on part of the Council. "The Joint Secretary of the Sports Council, who represents Jammu had not cared to e visit the hall even once where players are suffering" he added.
An ace gymnast while expressing her anguish said, "Everyday we train in pitch darkness and have to forgo training with our implements to avoid injuries; but it is sad that no one seems concerned about our plight". "While the hall is without electricity for over 15 days, there is complete insanitation in the stadium and no provision of drinking water for the children, which speaks volumes about the incapability of the concerned officials," she added.
The indifferent attitude of the Council officers can be gauged from the comment of the sports officer Jammu, Rajan Sharma, who when contacted said, "I can only tell you unofficially that the light was repaired twice, but it developed snag again, but my manager is out of station, so officially I can't say anything" he said. It is pity that while the important training centre is without power for two weeks, the nodal officer of the Council at a time when Council secretariat is in Srinagar does not even have correct information about the pathetic state of affairs in the indoor complex.
Meanwhile, ET learnt from reliable sources that the matter was brought in the notice of the Secretary Sports Council in Srinagar, but rather than ensuring immediate restoration of power in the indoor hall, he only slept over the matter that directly affected the training and even security of the players. "A detailed assessment of the damage to the system was made by the engineering wing of the Council and sent to the Secretary Sports Council, but he is sitting over the file" said an official of the Engineering wing pleading anonymity.
