Early Times Report

Srinagar, Oct 7: The state Government’s has failed to implement the Jammu and Kashmir Heritage Conservation and Preservation Act 2010 aimed at conserving and preserving heritages sites, sources told Early Times.
They said the lackadaisical approach of the state government in implementing this Act is all set to tear down the Kashmir's rich inheritance of more than 5000 years as the heritage sites in the Valley have a great importance which need to be preserved.
Expert's opinion in this regard confirms the unfeeling approach of the authorities who according to them have miserably failed to preserve Kashmir's heritage places having played significant role in attracting the guests of both national and international standard since centuries. According to official study Kashmir at its every corner has treasure of legacy; however the impassive stance other than tall claims of the government have failed to attract tourists, unlike in other states where heritage tourism is one of the fastest growing industry. A top official of Archeological department said the Act has been framed but the authorities are not bothered to implement it. Under this Act, the government has to identify, register and make efforts for the preservation of buildings, of great heritage importance. He claimed that the Jammu and Kashmir Heritage Conservative Act has been confined to papers which clearly shows the unfeeling approach of the authorities . "Kashmir has a very rich cultural heritage in terms of buildings built during different regimes and needs to be preserved. "However, they are in shambles and crave for attention. Darbar Hall, which now houses Divisional Commissioner's office, was built by Afghan rulers. The authorities are vandalizing it, but it has a huge heritage importance and should be converted into Art Gallery," he suggested. If the sources are to be believed the government had constituted Jammu and Kashmir Heritage Conservation and Preservation Authority for conservation and preservation of heritage both tangible and intangible with a Corpus Fund to the tune of Rs 50 crore. "But nothing has happened on the ground. Government is not bothered to preserve the heritage sites in the Valley."
