BJP's pakoda politics
2/13/2018 8:59:36 PM
Omkar Dattatray

In the murkier field of politics anything and everything is being politicized. Earlier it was onion politics or onionization of politics but today pakoda politics has eclipsed the political discourse of the country. Today it is pakoda politics and tomorrow it can be jallebi politics. To divert the attention of the gullible masses from real issues the master strategist of BJP's PM Modi has resorted to Pakoda politics. Prime Minister Narinder Modi resorted to a fact that a person selling Chai and Pakoda who earns Rs. 200 is able to feed his family and is considered as employed. Politburo member B.V Raghavular has criticized the BJP led union government for 2018 budget. According to him budget has dashed all hopes of the common man. Prime minister Modi's view that selling pakoda is an employment too and BJP President Amit Shah's recent statement in Rajya Sabha that selling pakoda is better than being jobless has been criticized by Mr. Raghavular. He attacked the BJP government over its comparing self employment to creating jobs to cover up its mistakes with pakoda selling. Amit Shah made a virtue of Modi's pakoda remark. He supported Modi's remark by saying that if a person sells a pakoda and takes home Rs. 200 every evening it will be an employment notwithstanding the fact that there is no job security in pakoda selling. Prime Minister Modi said in an interview that pakoda selling is a job. The statement of Narinder Modi created quite a buzz in opposition parties as what he said implied that even selling pakoda is a job. Politicians started a debate on social platform about how can Modi jee advice the unemployed youth to sell pakodas. In Maharashtra opposition preempted a move to stage a pakoda agitation by setting up a make shift stall to sell snacks. The alliance partner Shiv Sena also hit out at PM Narinder Modi and BJP for his pakoda remark. Shiv sena member Nirupam criticized BJP government's pakoda politics by saying that it has miserably failed to provide employment to lakhs of educated unemployed youths throughout the country. Ruling Shiv Sena charged that through these kinds of remarks the centre was trying to divert the people's attention from key issues including Kashmir where jawans are dying in Pak and terrorist firing. Pakodas are being fried to divert attention of the masses from serious issues. It is very unfortunate that when out valiant jawans are dying in J&K the BJP is engaged in pakoda politics. In MP police faced problem in controlling activists of both congress and BJP who were engaged in pakoda agitation. To counter the congress attack about the pakoda remark by Modi and BJP president Amit Shah, the BJP activists gathered at the board office square. The activists were marching toward Pradesh congress committee office where congress activists were protesting. Mr. Chidambaram has raised a valid question of job security in selling pakodas for a reasonable and secured standard of living. The four year term of BJP in office has not been able to provide jobs to unemployed youths while as it had promised jobs in its election manifesto of 2014 general election. Anandinben, the governor of M.P has remarked that a pakoda seller can open a restaurant after two years and a hotel after that. The M.P governor's remark came as the ruling BJP and opposition congress in the poll bound state is engaged in a war of words over PM's statement that selling pakoda is a viable employment option. She has jumped into the pakoda controversy that was stoked by PM Modi who opined that selling fritters can be a good career option if one is skillful for it. Making pakoda is a skillful job and profession as no one will eat them if they are not tasty. According to Rahul Kothari, PM has voiced the pain of weaker and deprived sections of the society but the congress has decided to mislead the public by twisting his statement. BJP had promised two crore jobs in its election manifesto but after coming to power nothing of the sort has happened while the existing jobs have decreased with each passing day. In fact, PM Modi's statement of what is wrong with selling pakodas remark has triggered a political slugfest across the country. BJP's contention is that making pakoda is a skill that could be a stepping stone to a flourishing small business. Amit shah has also jumped in the ring to through a few punches for Mr. Modi by claiming that selling pakoda is better than being unemployed. The government has miserably failed to create even a fraction of a number of jobs it promised before 2014 general elections and so has lost moral right to pontificate its citizens on the virtue of self employment. The million dollar question is how many thousands of educated youth will take pakoda selling as a job. Pakoda selling is a minor job and there is no security of job in pakoda selling.
