Mist over attacks on army formations
Mahadeep Singh Jamwal2/17/2018 9:20:06 PM
"Bad governments always lie because telling the truth requires honor and courage" - Mehmet Murat Ildan, Turkish playwright, novelist and thinker. Whenever a militant attack surface in the J&K that may be on army formation, police or civilians instead of analyzing the shortcomings on the part of government, intelligence agencies and workforce meant to curtail such events, all make space in the electronic as well as print media that such acts are because of frustration of Pakistan, owing to the killing and hounding out of militant operators from J&K, carrying out missions of their 'Aakas' sitting across the border. The available information on search engines reminds us of Uri attack on army on September 18, 2016 and statements of then Northern Army Commander who was very honest to state that "It was terrible. Very difficult to justify what happened. There were definitely lapses on our part". The then Defence Minister has genuinely admitted that "something must have been wrong" because of which the Uri terror attack took place. But on the other side the President of BJP bandwagon went on to state at Kozhikode that attack on Uri army formation was an outcome of frustration after security forces foiled 17 infiltration attempts. Very cunningly he tried to shield the failure of Modi government's policy towards Pakistan and Kashmir. Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned the Pakistani establishment that the sacrifices in the Uri incident would not go waste and was very proud to speak about Pakistan as "Unko akele rahne ko majboor kar ke rahenge". The Modi government came under heavy criticism for being spineless to act with heavy hand. But nearly 10 days after the Uri attack that claimed heavy loss of Indian soldiers life, India claimed of carrying out a "surgical strikes" on "terrorist launch pads" in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir along the Line of Control, (a claim Pakistan rejected - maintaining that two soldiers were killed in "Indian unprovoked firing" along three sectors of the LoC) inflicting heavy casualties on terrorists and 'those protecting them". One and all from the BJP cadre took this daring act as biggest achievement of 56 inch chest in the history of India of strike on foreign land, forgetting the dare devil decision of then PM Smt. Indira Gandhi, when the Pakistan was cut into two with the creation of Bangladesh. BJP president Amit Shah lauded Modi and the Army over the surgical strikes, calling it a "frontal fight against terrorism" which would make India feel "secure". Those divested of the power never miss the opportunity to target those in power and have not learnt how to keep their mouth shut during critical and important situations. While referring to the surgical strikes, Rahul Gandhi said that "humare jawan hai jinhone khoon diya hai, jinhone surgical strikes kiya, unke khoon ke peeche aap (Modi) chuppe huye hai (Our soldiers conducted surgical strikes and gave their blood. Modi is just hiding behind their sacrifices)". But, what we saw after surgical strike there were continuous attacks by terrorists as on October 2, 2016 they attacked Rashtriya Rifles army camp, on 6 October, attempted to storm a Rashtriya Rifles camp, on November 24 attacked Kralgund police station in Handwara and striked in a major way at Nagrota-based 16 Corps headquarters on November 29, 2016 killing 7 soldiers including 2 officers. If we have to believe the India Spend analysis of data from the South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP) run by the New Delhi-based Institute for Conflict Management there has been a 31% increase in deaths (till September 24, 2017) due to terrorist-related incidents and infiltration in J&K continue unabated even after the surgical strikes in Jammu & Kashmir. All the attacks were taken by BJP political class as well as by ministry as outcome of the 'frustration' of the Pakistan and killing of soldiers was condoled with same words 'Their Shahadat will not go waste' (BJP's all time sonnets on attacks and killings). Some politicians from the state themselves frustrated owing to ceased of powers never think before they speak during analytical and crucial situations. The Nagrota attack was reacted by Omar Abdullah former CM of J&K by stating that "The Nagrota attack is a result of statements made by various ministers against Pakistan". This he has referred as to the statement of then Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar that "If someone looks at the country with evil eye, we will gouge his eyes out and put them back in his hand". The statement of ex-CM in no way can be taken on a positive note for the country. The most important aspect was never raised as 'failure of our intelligence agencies' operating in the state/country in tapping such information in advance for preventive measures. The recent attack of militants at Sunjwan (Jammu) is taken by one and all from the civil society as another failure of intelligence gathering and security lapse but we find a statement in print media where one responsible officer of a force refused to accept the contention that a security lapse led to last week's suicide attack on army camp in Sunjwan Jammu and said it was a frustrated attempt by Pakistan after it failed to encounter the army's dominance at the LoC. Plainly it is taken as a political statement rather than a statement of wits. An ordinary and very simple question jumps into every mind that if there is army's dominance on LoC, as claimed, how the assailants managed to cross over the border and travelling a safe distance reached in the heart of city Jammu to intrude inside the army camp and brought hell on Army Jawans and the civilians inside the camp. It would have been better to accept the reality with courage as shown by Northern Army Commander on Uri attack honestly admitting as a soldier that "It was terrible. Very difficult to justify what happened. There were definitely lapses on our part". The Raksha Mantri repeated the cyclostyled words in Jammu that "Pakistan will pay for this misadventure," and India's reply to them will be of its choice of time and place, strong warning and stressed for giving evidence of the attack to Pakistan. What else can be expected from the Modi dispensation? When we find a lady not even attending a NCC camp in her life is the defence Minister of India.
Here we have to visit the Modi policy towards Pakistan. The number of security personnel killed in terrorist violence in the state has increased 72 percent -from 111 in the last three years of UPA-II to 191 in the BJP's first three years. The number of civilian deaths in J&K has also increased by 37 percent. Probably forgetting its earlier word "Unko akele rahne ko majboor kar ke rahenge" during Uri attack, PM Modi in January 2018 stated that India is not working to isolate any nation, nor is the country's foreign policy formulated around Pakistan. The policy is "based in the context of India and its relations with the world". Liberal commentators are imploring the government to try a different approach before it is too late. Mainstream commentators are disturbed because they probably sense in recent developments a sign that the model of managing Kashmir no longer works. Earlier much claimed surgical strikes, demonetization, FIRs against hawala operators all stand dashed on the ground. The Modis sop through Mehbooba Mufti for releasing criminals (stone Pelters) is taken as a childish idea to curtail militancy. The swollen face of the center not to engage with dialogue continuously asked and pressed by its alliance CM and appointing an interlocutor speaks of no policy of Modi on Kashmir conflict and he still believes in dashing uninvited to Pakistan on any occasion and keeping the Pakistan as 'Most favoured Nation' and looking for countries where he is frequently visiting to come to his rescue or to teach Pakistan a lesson on India's behalf. Here few lines of Ghalib struck to my mind: "Aah Ko Chaahiye Ik Umr Asar Hone Tak - Kaun Jeeta Hai Teri Zulf Ke Sar Hone Tak - Aashiqi Sabr-Talab Aur Tamanna Betab, Dil Ka Kya Rang Karun Khoon-E-Jigar Hone Tak - Ham Ne Manna Ke Tagaaful Na Karoge Lekin - Khaak Ho Jaayenge Ham Tum Ko Khabar Hone Tak" and few lines of Ghalib to vicious minds across the borders: "Kaaba Kis Munh Se Jaoge Ghalib - Sharm Tum Ko Magar Nahin Aati".
Concluding with the words of Benjamin Disraeli, a British politician and writer, who twice served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom "A sophistical rhetorician, inebriated with the exuberance of his own verbosity, and gifted with an egotistical imagination that can at all times command an interminable and inconsistent series of arguments to malign an opponent and to glorify himself" is the true reflection of our PM Modi Jee and his Government and under such situation we must stick to the words of ? Mehmet Murat ildan "If your country is governed by the most stupid people, it is vital for you to continue going up personally while your nation and your country is going down because your country will inevitably collapse and it will be in need of people like you, people who managed to improve themselves while everything else was falling and deteriorating".
