The Chief Commissioner Income Tax deliberated upon various Income Tax provisions which, over the period, have now became very simple and liberal. The assessee assesses his income himself without any compulsion or coercion and files his return which the department mostly accepts and assesses in a routine manner without subjecting the data reflected to any scrutiny. This is verifiable from the fact that less than 0.1% of the returns filed are subjected to scrutiny by the Department that too in those cases where credible information is available with the department.
He further stated that the Department in the past has given ample opportunities to the citizens to come clean in their income disclosures and honestly disclose their income and pay taxes for effective progress of the Nation's economic health. The Department has in possession credible financial data obtained through various data mining techniques and it was impressed upon by the Chief Commissioner that the people should voluntarily declare true and correct income to avoid any punitive action from the Department.
During the session, it was also emphasized that as per the data available with the Department, huge number of taxpayers are paying self assessment tax while filing the returns after the end of the financial year rather than paying their due advance taxes during the financial year in which the income is earned.
