Importance of Effective Communication
Dr. Banarsi Lal & Dr. Vikas Tandon10/22/2018 10:32:41 PM
Communication is the core activity of human association in general and progress as well as development in particular. No human life can exist in isolation. A man can survive only in society and the survival in society is possible with communication. Therefore, communication is identified as the oldest continued activity of human beings since birth and goes on and on till death. More precisely, communication is the basic need of human beings and web of society which makes the survival, growth, progress and development of man possible and holds the society intact and progressive. Communication is a vital part of personal life in the society. It is equally important in business, education, civilization, administration and other situations where people encounter with each other to satisfy their needs and wishes. Communication maintains and animates the life. It leads people from instinct to inspiration, through process and system of enquiry, command and control. It creates a common pool of ideas, strengthens the feeling of togetherness through the exchange of messages and translates through into action. As the world has advanced, the task of communication has become more complex. However, unless some basic structural changes are introduced, the potential benefits of technological and communication development will hardly be put at disposal of the majority of mankind. The rural poverty and its related incidences may decline if one puts efforts for sustained growth in agricultural production. The extension communication system and network is the key input in increasing the performance in agricultural production. Therefore, the communication is the most powerful input which brings substantial development in socio-economic status of an individual.
The present age has been rightly termed as an 'information age'. Information plays an immense value in our society. Information has become an integral part of our daily life. Now people want adequate and authentic information as early as possible. The mass media namely newspaper, radio and television are catering to this important need of people. For the rapid and overall development of a country it is must that the citizens of that country are well versed with the happenings around them. Electronisation and mechanization in communication systems have provided opportunity to access the information rapidly, accurately and repeatedly. To reach the unreached modern electronic gadgets and systems have been introduced to cope-up the requirements. The government of India has realized the need and utility of these electronic equipments for rural population. Therefore, massive programmes of cyber extension, digital interactive distance learning, online networks, computers aided multi media, internet and free online telephones etc. have been launched for the farmers. Some of the major extension technology systems and approaches are being used presently like call centres, Cyber Extension, ATIC, computer-internet connectivity etc. The success of an individual depends on his communication abilities. Scientists, engineers, journalists, politicians, corporate executives, actors etc. remain busy in writing and speaking. Effective power-point presentation is a subset of communication. In our recent life we all need to deliver the power- point presentations and we have lost our natural way of expression. How we can create the attention among the audience is a matter of concern. In most of the presentations generally we notice that the audience check their smart phones and the hurried speaker tries to get through his/her presentation through any means in the stipulated time. In present era in order to become the effective communicator we need to make effective power -point presentation. One picture represents one thousand words idiom suits for power-point presentation.
Whether we have to deliver technical presentation or political or religious lectures we need to incorporate professional photographs or graphs in our power point presentation to create attention among the audience. Minimum number of words (not more than six words) should be kept in the slides for one point and large font size should be ensured. Lesser number of words should be preferred in the power point presentation. If we have more number of slides we may fall into the trap of reciting rather than sharing of our experience and communicating effectively with the audience. Story narration is another effective method of communication. Steve Jobs is considered as the one of the most effective speakers of the 21st century. According to him there is need to weave the stories from ones professional and personal experience in the presentation to engage the audience. There is no need to mug the slides and also there is no need to bombard the slides with words. Enthusiasm and passion for the subject is must for the speaker. Formal presentations require back-up material. Slide material should be converted in notes. One can clarify the complexity in the material through notes. Ultimately the audience requires the clarity in concepts. The videos in the power point presentation can act as double-edged sword in power-point presentation. In order to make presentation more effective well-filmed and edited short videos should be preferred and they should not be more than 2 minutes. Be prepare for the technology breakdown. For instance, power failure or equipment failure can disturb the presentation. At that time one needs to go in 16th century to keep the audience engaged. Even in that era the person like Steve Jobs would have been excelled. In order to overcome this problem one needs to keep the hard copy of the presentation. Before presentation one needs to have complete mastery over the subject.
