Early Times Report

Srinagar, Dec 12: The Kashmiri Pandits in the valley are not only concerned about their security but also crave for basic amenities.
Four policemen, who were guarding a minority pocket in south Kashmir's Shopian district, were killed on Tuesday by militants.
The pocket houses six Kashmiri Pandit families, but only one family was present there at the time of the incident.
At the time of the attack, the policemen, wearing 'pheran' (a gown worn in Kashmir during winters), were braving cold in their pre-fabricated guardroom outside the minority pocket at Zainpora area of the district.
As the official documents of Divisional Commissioner office, a copy of which lies with Early Times, the migrant coordination committee last month held a meeting with Divisional Commissioner Kashmir. In the meeting District Development Commissioners attended the meeting some via tele-conference.
In the meeting, the documents reveal, various issues including security, shortage of ration, power, drinking water and healthcare were discussed.
The issues of non-completion of construction works at KP Colony Vessu, Kulgam, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Mattan, and Model schools at Vessu, Sheikhpora was also discussed.
"The chairman migrant coordination committee also requested for improved security in Nutnussa migrant camp Kupwara and other migrant camps. He also contended that DC Kupwara has not paid a single visit to the far flung migrant camps to review the arrangements or take stock of basic amenities," the documents reads.
"As far as payment of rent, posting of enployees and conducting of DPCs are concerned, the Div Com directed that such issues require specific details from intending employees and involve the specific practice and rule," they were told.
A source said that Pandits have raised the security issue several times. "Yesterday the militants killed four policemen who were for security of Pandits and fled away with rifles. Such incidents have further put the Pandits in despair," the source said.
Quoting eyewitnesses, the source said that militants fired indiscriminately, killing three policemen on the spot and critically injuring one on Tuesday. The injured policeman was rushed to an Army hospital, where he succumbed to injuries, the official said. The deceased were identified as Abdul Majeed Ganaie, Mehraj-ud-din Dar, Anees Ahmad Mir and Hameed-ul-lah Ganaie.
