Darkness lies below the Lantern
Power Starved Chenab Region
2/23/2019 9:48:37 PM
Mohd Rafi Malik

We have been listening
since decenniums that our state is altogether potential to produce electricity in thousands of Mega watt out of total more than 11,000 MW of hydro power is produced on river Chenab as per the assessments made from time to time by the different government and non-government teams.
But unfortunate part is that the power starved "Chenab" region had already been witnessing unscheduled power cuts and In spite of the complications being faced by the people, uncertainty is still prevailing over early restoration of power supply to the mountainous region by repairing the faults in transmission line at different places, which were caused by the disastrous snow fall and due to avalanches in the hilly areas of the region.
Earlier, the 132-KV single circuit Udhampur-Kishtwar transmission line had suffered extensive damage due to unexpected heavy snowfall as a result of which Chenab region, which is provided electricity through this line only, suddenly descended into complete darkness. After restless efforts, the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), which is responsible for the maintenance of this transmission line, restored the power supply to only few areas of Doda district.
However, the restoration work on transmission line of other remaining areas of Doda and Kishtwar affected due to rainfall.
The NHPC had conveyed the concerned wing of the State Power Development Department that repair of the damages to towers of the transmission line between Doda and Kishtwar will take some more days.
Evidently, on the distance of thirty kilometer from Thathri, Bhalessa area is still facing problems without power from almost one month, people of the area are suffering badly, as the snow has lashed the area and snapped all communication lines including transmission line supplying electricity due to which the mobile phones have been gone out of order, young generation has become handicapped without internet services. Aspirants, who have to fill their online recruitment forms, are in frustration. Some aspirants are managing telephonically by their known ones residing outside the state but some are'nt having such acquaintance outside too.
Besides, people are facing shortage of medicines, potable drinking water, ration, kerosene oil and other essential services. Surprising is that the administration is missing at the time of crisis. It would have been like a dream come true for the people of the Bhalessa that if the higher ups of the power development department would have visited to the area so far to inspect the ground situation but the unluckily the concerned department even hasn't bothered to deploy or send some other respective officers / officials for the checking the transmission line and damaged electric poles which some places are extirpate and some have become like in steep ascent position. The administration too continues to remain insensitive towards the extremity of people which forces the civil society members to come on the roads and made them to raise slogans for the "ill-preparedness" of Administration for the winter. Villagers are holding protest against the PDD department's failure in restoring power supply to the Bhalessa.
The situation has become havoc in the Bhalessa are for the one month. Reportedly, the residents of Tehsil Headquarter Tandla are rectifying the faults of the transmission line and drilling the electric poles at their own, "photograph is depicting factual position of the area" but the concerned PDD department has neglected their legitimate duties and has shown closed eyes on the situation.
How embarrassing it would be for the officials of the PDD department who will be claiming their electricity bills from the residents for such time they have kept them in darkness.
