Disgruntled tourists criticize SMC’s pathetic functioning
No toilet for tourists in Srinagar

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, June 24:  For all wrong reasons, the infamous Srinagar Municipal Corporation is in news once again; this time for miserably failing to provide toilet facility to tourists in the summer capital.
Thanks to SMC as Srinagar continues to remain a hub of garbage and filth, there is also one more reason why SMC is receiving brickbats from people.  There is not even a single public toilet facility provided by the Corporation- neither for general public nor for the tourists who in droves are visiting the famous Mughal gardens and other sites of interest in Srinagar.
Several tourists could be seen complaining about the lack of toilet and washroom facilities in Srinagar, accusing the SMC of turning blind eye towards the hardships being faced by people.
A middle aged tourist from west Bengal recalled how he had to rush back from old city area of Khaniyar to Raj Bagh where Raj Bagh where his hotel was located only to urinate.  ”I have some renal issues and when I found there wasn’t a single public toilet facility in Srinagar, I preferred to rush back to the hotel,”  said the annoyed visitor.
There were others who besides ruing the lack of public toilet facilities in main areas of city also questioned the administration for its indifferent attitude. “Men can pee anywhere. What about women. If you cannot have a concrete public toilets available, at least press into service the mobile toilet vans. This is the least we can ask from the SMC. However, the corporation seems be in no mood to provide any assistance to the aggrieved tax payers,” says shop owner in Srinagar who deals with Kashmir arts and whose business is directly associated with the tourist arrival.
Meanwhile, there are masses and even the tourists who are annoyed over the lack of sanitation facilities in Srinagar and accused the SMC of ruining the otherwise beautiful city of Srinagar to the core.
The heaps of garbage lying everywhere is acting as a spoilsport in city’s overall opulence besides exposing SMC’s inefficacy in more ways than just one.
As per the survey done by various government and non- government agencies, there is not even percent of the waste being processed or treated by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation.  And out of 100 percent, the SMC has been collecting only 75 percent of the waste from the City out of which less than 5 percent is processed.  The wastes are disposed of indiscriminately at garbage dumping sites and that the creation of the composting units or mechanical segregators is a distant dream.
As per data available on SMC website 450 metric tons of solid waste is generated with the SMC limits on daily basis. Due to various reasons this waste is not at all treated and is finally dumped at Achen landfill site in Srinagar. As per the power point presentation uploaded on SMC website for seeking feedback on developing Srinagar into a Smart City not even in a single residential area (colonies  , mohallas etc) or  commercial establishments have the facility of   segregation of solid waste . Due to absence of this facility all the waste (bio degradable / non bio degradable) generated in these areas is lifted in SMC vehicles and dumped unscientifically without any treatment.
