Coalition candidates to face 'ire' of 'disgruntled voters' from erstwhile Doda

Early Times report
Jammu, Nov 29: The sarpanches and panches of erstwhile district Doda may snub National Confer-ence-Congress party allia-nce candidates in the forthcoming election for legislative council polls from Panchayat quota.
The 33000 sarpanches and panches of state will cast their votes for four seats of legislative council on December 3 for which the NC-Congress coalition government is fighting the election jointly. The elected panchayat representatives of Jammu will vote for two candidates J1 and J2 and similarly from Kashmir region these representatives will vote for two seats K1 and K2.
In Jammu region the main focus of all political parties in the erstwhile district Doda which so far is without any representation in the state cabinet. Due to this approach of government of not giving representation to people of Doda, there is a strong resentment among every one and sarpanches and panches also feel isolated.
These sarpanches and panches feel that the government has taken them for granted and is trying to take political mileage.

"All our MLAs and political activists belonging to Congress party are asking us to vote for coalition candidate, which is not acceptable to us. We are not puppets and we will decide whether to vote for coalition candidates or not," a sarpanch from district Doda, having proximity with Congress party told Early Times requesting anonymity.
The sarpanch said that they are not bound adhere to the orders of government as the panchayat elections were held non-party basis. "It is the fact that we have affiliation with Congress party but if opposition parties approach us we may go with them," he added.
For past one week ministers, leaders of both NC and Congress and local MLAs of district Doda are touring the area to get the support for coalition candidates but panchayat representatives have not opened their cards and are waiting for. There is ample chance that main opposition party in state Assembly, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may snatch handful votes of Sarpanches and panches from erstwhile district Doda.

The reason behind this is the old rivalry between NC and Congress leaders of this district which never allow them to get together despite having their coalition government.

Going by previous records ofDoda Assembly segment, there had been straight tussle between NC and Congress candidates in 2002 and 2008 Assembly elections, which Congress candidate and present MLA Abdul Majeed Wani won by beating his rival and former MoS Home Khalid Najeeb Suharwardy. It is very difficult for both these leaders to convince their men on ground to vote for candidates of rival party.

Though the MLA Doda is rejecting the theory that Sarpanches and Panches having affiliation with Congress party have to vote for coalition candidate and not on the name of NC.
Similarly, in Banihal and Ramban Assembly segments history of rivalry between NC and Congress is casting a shadow of uncertainty on the voting pattern in the upcoming MLC elections. Neither of the party leaders will wish to lose votes in the bigger clash in the 2014 Assembly elections.
