BEACON becomes villain as Katra-Reasi road gives nightmares to commuters

Udhampur, Sept 25: Tall claims of state government to boost tourism in Jammu province stay on papers as dangerously poor road infrastructure has repelled tourists from visiting most places of tourist interest across the province.
The condition of most roads in Reasi district including those leading to holy town of Katra has gone from bad to worse, causing great inconvenience to pilgrims visiting the holy abode of Mata Vaishno Devi."
The dilapidated condition of road leading to the holy town sends a very poor impression of the state to the pilgrims visiting the state from all across the country" said a local resident Sunny Sharma.
The roads leading to other tourist destinations like the , the Shiv Khori Shrine, the Shiar Bawa temple and Dera Bawa Sahib are in a deplorable condition."As the majority of tourists arrive in the state using the surface transport, the neglected condition of roads is a dampener for the tourism promotion," felt Vikrant Singh, a Katra-based businessman .
The condition of Reasi-Dharmari road, which is a vital link in the Mahore area, is also in a dilapidated condition from over a decade. Residents said after the failure of the R&B Department in repairing the road, the work was handed over to BEACON but the lackadaisical approach of the authorities did not end their problems.
Alka Sharma of Janipur Jammu who reached Ransoo, the base camp for the Shiv Khori Shrine said, " We reached Katra from Vaishno Devi, but as we entered Karwa 13 kilometres away from holy town , the condition of road was horrible. Poor maintenance of roads not only spoiled our mood, but also damaged our vehicle due to big potholes," she said.
More than a crore tourists visited Vaishno Devi every year and they could be diverted towards other tourist destinations in Reasi district but the poor road network is hindering the influx and retention of tourists," said a local social worker Sanjeev Singh Kotli Manyotra Reasi .He alleged that widening of 26 kilometre katra -Reasi road was started by BEACON more than eight years ago but after completing 13 kilometres, work is going on with snail's pace.
He added that widening of rest of the stretch has been completed but due to unconcern of BEACON and administration it is not being black toped giving nightmare to commuters and tourist visiting here. He added that urgent repair and black-topping could put an end to the travelling woes of tourists.
Local residents said that due to deplorable condition of roads they have to bear losses, as their vehicles develop problems and often break down.
