Omar's smart card fails to impress Rahul as Jammu disruption resonates at Pulwama
Congress Vice-President castigates Omar for not empowering Panchayats

SRINAGAR, Nov 7: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's attempt to play smart about the disruption during Congress Vice-President, Rahul Gandhi's speech at the Panchayat conference in Jammu on Wednesday failed to impress the latter as Rahul said that whatever the Sarpanch has said is right and needs to be looked into by the state Government headed by Omar.
Addressing the function at Industrial Growth Centre (IGC) at Lassipora in South Kashmir's Pulwama district, Omar said that the Sarpanch who created disruption during the Panchayat Conference belonged to National Panthers Party (NPP). Omar alleged that this was done to defame the state Government and that NPP in real sense is not interested in empowering the Panchayats across the state.
“The Sarpanch who created trouble at Jammu during the Panchayat conference owed allegiance to National Panthers Party. He was there just to create fuss among the Panchayat representatives so that the state Government is defamed among them. The party is not interested in empowerment of Panchayats and they are just playing politics on this issue," said Omar.
Chief Minister said that some of the political parties are playing politics over the issue of empowerment of Panchayats. He blamed NPP for 'creating misunderstandings' and trying to 'belittle' the state Government. He claimed the Sarpanch and his supporters were not using the powers given to the Panchayati Raj institutions.
However, the smart card played by Omar was fizzled out by Rahul Gandhi who said that whosoever disrupted his speech was right since the state Government has failed in fully empowering the Panchayati Raj institutions in the state. Rahul asked Omar to fully empower the Panchayats instead of establishing the roots of Sarpanch who disrupted his speech at Jammu.
"Whatever the Sarpanch said was right and there is no need to go into the finer details in that respect. The state Government should stop beating against the bush and instead take practical steps to fully empower the Panchayats in Jammu and Kashmir. We will continue to raise our demand for empowerment of Panchayats and we will not hold back," said Congress Vice-President.
Rahul advised Omar to listen to the demand raised by Sarpanch and said that in politics there is no harm in acceding to the suggestions made by opponents at times. He while responding to the reportage of press about the incident said that he was glad that the same was reported extensively thus giving an impression that there is some truth in press in the state.
Later, addressing the Congress Ministers and delegates at the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) headquarters here, the Congress Vice-President said that Congress would continue to pressurize its coalition partner, National Conference for the empowerment of Panchayats in the state. He said proper empowerment is important as it would lead to wonderful results in this tier of self governance.
"Implementation of 73rd and 74th amendments in the State Panchayati Raj Act would go a long way in complete empowerment of Panchayati Raj institutions. Local Bodies need to be given their due share in the governance and same is possible with the complete empowerment of Panchayati Raj institutions," said Rahul.
