JAMMU, Jan 24: Several doctors engaged under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) have quit their jobs and reportedly more may be compelled to follow suit as doctors are without salary for the last more than three and half months.
Sources informed Early Times that specialist doctors were engaged in various hospitals under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) by Directorate of Health Services Jammu, out of which several were not paid salaries for months.
"Three specialist doctors were engaged in district hospital Samba under the scheme and are without salaries for the last more than 3 and half months, leading to serious financial crunch for them", a doctor pleading anonymity said.
He further added that in the time of high inflation, it was very difficult to manage affairs without salary even for a month, but after January, the salary of four months would be pending. "The doctors are mulling to leave their jobs and explore other options", he said, adding that due to delay in payment of salaries, already many doctors had left the job and several others were contemplating same," he added.
Another doctor engaged in district Rajouri said that dues of around six months were not paid by authorities, inspite of repeated appeals to concerned authorities. "The doctors working in Minister's constituency are being paid salaries and incentives on regular basis but in other areas, salaries and incentives have been withheld", he said.
Director of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) Dr. Yashpal Sharma said that there was no dearth of funds and they had already released the funds to Health department for disbursement of salaries to doctors, engaged by Health department under NRHM.
Chief Medical Officer Samba, Kartar Chand said that salaries of specialist doctors engaged under NRHM were pending for the last three months. "Today I received funds to the tune of Rs. 1.20 Lakh for disbursement of salary to specialist doctors. Salary of one specialist doctor is Rs. 48,000. To release salary of three months, we need atleast Rs. 4.50 Lakhs but we get only Rs. 1.20 Lakhs. In such scant funds, how can we pay salaries to these doctors", he said. He further said that once they get funds they would release salaries to the doctors. Director Health Services meanwhile, didn't pick up the phone despite repeated calls.
