Srinagar, Feb 24: Continuing with their anti-militancy operations Army on Monday achieved a major success by killing seven militants during an encounter in the Lolab forests in the North Kashmir's Kupwara district. Seven AK-47 rifles and some ammunition were recovered from the possession of slain militants.
Reports reaching here said that Army's 18 Rashtriya Rifles laid a cordon around the Madkulla Behak forests of Dardpora village in Lolab after receiving specific information about the presence of militants there. As the joint team started the combing operations, the militants hiding in the dense forests opened heavy fire upon them.
The fire was returned by the Army and this triggered off a gun-battle between the two sides. The encounter between the two sides led to the killing of seven militants. The identity of killed militants has not been established as yet. The gun shots on both sides rattled the entire forest range with shots being heard at a considerable distance.
As soon as the encounter started additional reinforcement was sent to the encounter site in order to assist the forces already engaged in the operation. Personnel of 28 Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operations Group (SOG) Tikipora were sent to the forests for carrying out the operations against the militants.
Reports said the militants killed in the encounter had infiltrated to this side from the other side of the Line of Control. The militants got trapped in the forests and were eliminated by the forces. This is one of the deadliest encounters in the Kupwara encounter in the recent past with militants suffering tremendous loss.
While some reports suggested that the encounter has ended, other reports said that the encounter is still going on in forests. It is apprehended that some more militants are hiding in the forests and operation to flush them out is going on. Due to the darkness the final picture is not clear as yet.
