Unprecedented voter turnout in Jammu-Poonch LS seat
Records 68% polling, way ahead of 2009 mark

JAMMU, Apr 10: Jammu-Poonch Parliamentary constituency, polling for which concluded this evening, witnessed 68 percent of its 18.48 million-strong electorate turning up at 2274 polling booths spread across four districts of Jammu, Samba, Rajouri and Poonch.
The unprecedented voter turnout recorded in Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat has crossed the 2009-Parliamentary polls' mark of 49.71 percent which is 18.29 percent more than the last election's polling percentage.
"As far as turnout for Jammu Parliamentary constituency goes we have confirmed reports right now that 68% polling has been recorded which is likely to go up as the final details regarding total poll percentage are still awaited.... This is only the last reported figure," said Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Umang Narula while addressing media persons here late in the evening.
CEO Narula further said that 70% votes were cast in Jammu district and 75% of electorates exercised their franchise in Samba district while figures of polling are yet to be received from Rajouri and Poonch districts which would add up to the final poll percentage tally subsequently.
"There are certain far flung areas in Rajouri and Poonch districts from where we are still getting reports and the figures on exact poll percentage are still awaited," said Narula.
He said the polling was conducted in a peaceful atmosphere and no untoward incident was reported from any part of the constituency.
"10, 000 polling personnel were put on duty in four districts of the constituency while Election Commission had deployed five Observers including three General Observers, one Expenditure Observer and one Police and Security Observer. Besides, 201 Micro Observers were deployed and webcasting of 60 booths was also done," said CEO.
Narula informed that the Commission had set up 2274 polling booths at 1582 locations out of which 68 booths at 61 different locations were declared as critical.
The CEO further said that 19 candidates were in the fray for the constituency which comprised of 18, 48, 563 electorates including 9, 77, 328 male and 8,71, 212 female voters.
Earlier, the voting for the Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat, the largest Parliamentary constituency in the state, started at 7 am across all polling stations with enthusiastic voters lining up to cast their votes to elect their representatives to the 16th Lok Sabha.
All through the day different polling stations witnessed long queues of electors comprising men, women, young and old. The eagerness of first time voters was quite visible as they flocked the polling stations with extraordinary energy.
The keenness of the voters to participate in the biggest carnival of democracy could be gauged from the fact that brisk voting was experienced in Jammu and Samba districts during the first two hours itself.
As many as 12.71 percent of voters had cast their votes in Jammu district till 9 am while the figures touched 12.14 percent mark in Samba district during the same time period.
In Rajouri and Poonch, the polling during first two hours was bit slow as only 4.21 percent and 7 percent of voters respectively had exercised their franchise till 9 am.
As the polling progressed, the voting pattern gained further momentum in all the four districts of the constituency.
By 11 am, in Jammu and Samba 24.32 and 32.63 percent of the electorates respectively had cast their votes while in Rajouri and Poonch, the figures were 24.06 and 18 percent respectively.
In the afternoon period, the voters literally thronged the polling stations as 45.02 percent of voters in Jammu, 54.27 voters in Samba, 39.76 percent voters in Rajouri and 37 percent voters in Poonch had exercised their right to franchise till 1 pm.
As the clock further ticks in, as many as 53.45 percent of voters cast their votes in Jammu till 3 pm while in Samba, the figures had crossed 60 percent since 64..09 voters reportedly cast their votes till then.
In Rajouri and Poonch, 49.66 and 50 percent of the voters respectively had exercised their voting right till 3 pm.
At 5 pm, the figures touched 65.27 percent in Jammu, 70.21 percent in Samba, 59.58 and 57 percent in Poonch.
Though, the Election Commission did not officially announce the exact poll percentage for Rajouri and Poonch till late in the evening, the unofficial figures, however, divulge that poll percentage in Rajouri district was 65.5 while it stood at 64.5 in Poonch district.
