Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 10: As election process for Jammu-Poonch Parliamentary seat came to an end this evening, the whole focus for all major stakeholders has shifted to Doda-Udhampur seat which will go to polls in next phase on April 17. Rivals Congress and BJP in particular are in race to get stalwarts from Central leadership on campaign as contest is going to be tough this time even as the Ghulam Nabi Azad, tallest leader of party in the state has a huge following in the hilly belt of this Parliamentary constituency. Banking on canvassing by star campaigners, Congress is geared up for tomorrow's mega show as party working president Rahul Gandhi is arriving to campaign for Ghulam Nabi Azad in Doda. On the other hand BJP is likely to cash it on none other than the party president Rajnath Singh to campaign in favour of its candidate Dr Jitendra Singh on this seat.
Sources said state unit of Congress is upbeat about Rahul Gandhi arriving tomorrow to campaign for the party in Doda where a public rally has been arranged. Apart from Congress leadership, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and other leaders of the coalition will share the stage tomorrow in presence of Rahul Gandhi. Rahul's visit is expected to give a boost to the entire constituency which is spread in many segments, mostly in hilly terrains and far flung areas of Doda, Kishtwar, Reasi and Ramban, said the sources adding that in many such places the party is facing stiff contest from PDP candidate who may cut into votes of areas which were hitherto considered to be strongholds of Congress and NC. Sources said Congress leadership is also looking forward to NC leaders aggressively campaigning in favour of alliance candidate Azad after Rahul's visit tomorrow as momentum on part of NC is yet to pick up on this constituency which is in contrast to what was observed in Jammu-Poonch seat where the party leaders exhibited fervour days ahead of vigorous campaign period.
On the other hand, sources within the BJP said that though party is heavily banking on Modi wave on this constituency as well to work, still it is relying on canvassing by stalwarts from Central leadership to give further filip to the mood of the voters. According to sources party President Rajnath Singh is likely to come within a few days and his public rally is being organised in Udhampur . As the schedule of all towering leaders of the party is very busy, the date has not yet been finalized for the visit, said the party sources adding that a strong recommendation from the state unit and the candidate for his visit has gone to the high command. This may materialize soon now as Congress is too trying to secure this seat, prestigious in a way, which is why Rahul Gandhi, the first among star campaigners from Centre is visiting Doda tomorrow.
