Protests rock Srinagar, peripheries, 1 killed several injured in police action

SRINAGAR, Apr 30: At least one person was killed and several others including a woman injured today in Nawa Kadal area of Old City here in clashes between the stone throwing youth and police.
Police had to use tear smoke shells and fire several rounds to disperse the protesting mob just after the polling culminated in old city of Srinagar resulting in the killing of one person identified as Bashir Ahmad Bhat son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat of Braripora Nawakadal and injuries to Nazir Ahmad Kaloo and Haleema Bano wife of Reyaz Ahmad Sheikhsaz of Gretbal Nawakadal .
Eyewitnesses said a group of protesters pelted stones on a police party during which rifle of one cop felt down as he tried to flee from the spot. Sources said as managed to get back his service rifle, he fired indiscriminately on the protesters injuring Bashir Ahmad, a resident of Brari Pora Nawa Kadal and Haleema. The injured were rushed to SKIMS. However, Bashir Ahmad Bhat who was hit by bullet in abdomen succumbed to injuries in the hospital while the condition of Haleema who was hit by pellet on head is reported to be critical.
Sources said the protesters pelted stones wounding a paramilitary personnel identified as Sandeep Kumar of 131 Bn. Subsequently, the forces opened fire besides resorting to pellet firing which led to death of Bashir. The condition of other injured protester, Nazir Ahmad and Khalid are reportedly stable.
As the news spread, people came on roads and started shouting anti-India slogans and resorted to stone pelting. At least three more persons were injured in the clashes that erupted in other localities of down town Srinagar after the news of youth's killing spread. Earlier in the day police and security forces have to fire teargas on Wednesday to at several places to disperse the stone pelting protesters who were trying to disrupt the election process in Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha seat which went for polls today. Though more than 1200 people including separatist leaders who called for an election boycott were taken into custody or placed under house arrest ahead of the vote in Srinagar, the protesters resorted to heavy stone pelting at many places in Ganderbal, Down Town Srinagar and Chadora in Budgam district. Hundreds of police and paramilitary CRPF personnel wearing body armour and leg guards were challenged by the stone throwing groups gathered at intersections who threw stones at police and election officials. Tulmullah, Baroosa, Moonchwa, Rainawari, Nawhatta, Khanyar, Nawakadal and Safakadal.
Meanwhile, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the killing of a youth Waseem Ahmad of Braripora Nawakadal in the firing of security forces. In a statement the party president Mehbooba Mufti said killings with impunity only add to tragedies and it is unfortunate that at the end of a comparatively peaceful day a precious life was lost to disproportionate use of force. While expressing solidarity with the bereaved family Mehbooba said that nothing can compensate their loss. She conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the parents and family of the deceased.
Meanwhile, separatist leaders including hardliner Sayed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq have called for a shutdown tomorrow as a mark of protest against the killing.
