District, sub-district hospitals lack adequate facilities
Govt fails to prioritize health sector

SRINAGAR, May 9: The state government has failed to prioritize the health sector and people, more so from the rural areas continue to suffer for want of quality health care as district and sub- district hospitals lack adequate facilities.
Due to the lack of facilities at the district level there is an over burden on the premier hospitals of the state. As such the basic motive of setting up these premier hospitals gets lost. The district as well as sub-district hospitals lack men and machinery which is a requisite for the efficient delivery of the services to the people.
"Though there are hospitals, health centers and nursing homes across the towns of the state but still then most of the people are not satisfied with the quality of the services provided there. This increases dependence of people on the city hospitals thus creating mess at these health institutions,'' said Shabir Ahmad from Lar, Ganderbal.
As far as health facilities in the towns and villages are concerned a lot needs to be done. Despite receiving crores of rupees quality health care is missing at these places compelling the people to take routes to the premier hospitals of the state.
Though efforts have been taken to revolutionize the health sector in the rural areas, but according to the people the confidence level in the medical staff there is so low that people have no faith in them hence driving a huge rush of people to the territory hospitals of the state.
"We can't risk our lives because the health facilities in towns more so in the villages have nothing to offer since there is dearth of men and machinery," said a group of people of Handwara area in Kupwara district.
These people went on saying that the doctors in the district and sub- district hospitals refer the patients with minor problems to Srinagar to save their skin. In this way an unprecedented rush of people make to the city hospitals thus hitting the patient care very badly.
This undue rush of the people at the city hospitals like that of SKIMS Soura disables the doctors to treat patients whose ailments are serious in nature hence depriving them from the right to access to the specialized treatment and proper care.
Dr. Javaid Ahmad at SKIMS Soura while talking to this correspondent said, "This hospital is more a visiting place than a tertiary hospital. The over burden of patients has badly affected the work of the doctors."
Dr. Javaid said that huge amount is spent in the health sector under various missions. But these all efforts should be aimed at improving the capability and capacity of the district and sub-district hospitals so that the premier hospitals of the state serve the people in the best of their capacities, he added.
