Play of light & darkness on Gupkar road speaks of PDP,NC fortunes | | | Bashir Assad Srinagar, May17 : Can a stretch of 200 meters see darkness and vibrant light at the same time ? Certainly, this seemed to be the case at Gupkar- road, the most exclusive residential address in Jammu and Kashmir's power centre-Srinagar. Today morning on wards, the residences of Dr. Farooq Abdullah and his son, chief minister Omar Abdullah seemed to be shrouded by sadness and an all- prevailing darkness. In stark contrast, the fairview residence of PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was awash in a vibrant, happy light. Even from the road it was clear that the place was abuzz with enthusiasm and optimism. Clearly, the results of the parliamentary elections have dealt a blow in J&K for beyond what is being seen in other states across the country. With assembly elections around the corner, PDP is energized and is ready to wrest power from the National Conference-congress combine. Interaction with the NC and Congress leaders reveal why despondency rules at the residences of Farooq and Omar. The senior NC leader has failed to retain his seat even a highly respected congress stalwart like Ghulam Nabi Azad has failed to open the congress account on the parliamentary elections front. With such veteran leaders of NC and congress suffering a miserable defeat, the verdict of the people seems to be written on the wall. Senior NC leaders admit that the party has lost the faith of the people and this will prove to be very costly in the forthcoming Assembly elections. On the contrary, the jubilant PDP camp is now drawing up its strategy to come to power in the state on its own strength in October. At Mufti's house on Gupkar road, preparations are on for the war-room strategist to define and implement a strong, winning campaign. Political observers highlight that the landslide victory for PDP in just concluded Lok Sabha elections is more of a challenge than a win. While it definitely gives the upper hand to PDP in the forthcoming assembly elections, the challenge is to transform this gain into a total majority win latter this year. Leading political observer -Rajni Shaleen Chopra highlight that the NC is presently facing an electoral crisis because of its failure to deliver on its tall electoral promises- the fact admitted by the chief minister himself yesterday. "The PDP may ride on this anti-incumbency wave and wrest power in the state. But the major challenge is to meet the expectations of the masses, who have denied even the basic human rights and liberties here" she said. Rajni, who toured length and breadth of Kashmir during the elections here, said that miss-governance and insensitivity of the NC-Congress ruling combine was unmatched and PDP, at least should learn from the failures of the Omar led council of ministry. " We have Naveen Patnaik, Mamata Banerji and Jaya Lalitha who have performed immensely well in Loke Sabha elections even after ruling their respective states for multiple consecutive terms only because they governed well" Rajni said adding that PDP which has now emerged as an alternative in Kashmir has to be serious in defining its agenda of governance and in giving solace to the people of the conflict ridden J&K. Another senior journalist pointed out that despite regaining its popularity as one of the top most tourism destination in the country, the infrastructure in the state continues to be extremely bad. He asserted that if PDP comes to power, its major task will be not only to address the security concerns of the state but also upgrade the badly deteriorated civic infrastructure. |
