Omar loses morality to govern state?
5/18/2014 12:56:27 AM
Jehangir Rashid

SRINAGAR, May 17: Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah seems not interested in putting in his papers despite the fact that his party and the coalition government he is heading faced rout in the parliamentary elections that concluded on Friday.
Instead of consulting his coalition partner the Congress party, Omar is buying time hoping against hope that things would go right in the coming days. He should have followed the footsteps of Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar and tendered his resignation.
Resignation of the coalition government headed by Omar has become due after National Conference and Congress faced rout at the hands of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) in Kashmir and Jammu divisions respectively in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
Political analysts believe and opine that Omar has no right to continue as Chief Minister of the state since his party and his coalition partner faced drubbing in the parliamentary elections. They say that things won't improve drastically over the next few months with both NC and Congress set to receive marching orders in the next assembly elections.
"Elections for the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly are due in the next six months and given the decimation of coalition parties in Lok Sabha elections, it is not difficult to predict their drubbing in the Assembly elections as well. It would be prudent for Omar to resign and be ready to sit in the opposition in the next Assembly," said political analysts.
There is a general belief among the people that parties and politicians can't take them for a ride and presume that they would vote for a particular party only. People have become mature enough and they can't be fooled by slogans based on politics of deception, hatred and misinformation.
"The 2014 Lok Sabha elections sprung up many surprises and it proved that no seat is safe enough for a particular party. National Conference would always boast that the eight seats of Srinagar district are always in their kitty and they need not to worry about the outcome of results of these seats. However, the things have changed dramatically with the party facing defeat in most of the assembly segments of Srinagar," said political analysts.
At the same time political analysts say that seats like Ganderbal and Kangan in Ganderbal district and Charar-I-Sharief and Budgam in Budgam district are no longer safe for National Conference. They said the party leaders should come out of the illusion that they would never lose from the 'so called' strong holds.
"Most of the people have voted against the non-performance of the legislators of the ruling coalition across the state. There seems to be governance deficit on the ground and this has cost National Conference and Congress very badly during the recently concluded parliamentary elections," said the political analysts.
Political analysts say that time is running fast for the leaders of both coalition parties and they need to pull up their socks at the speed of notches. However, they say that since assembly elections are very much round the corner it seems that debacle of National Conference and Congress would be repeated in near future.
