Lok Sabha poll defeat haunts Omar | Shelves ULB elections yet again | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 8: Fearing a repeat of Parliamentary polls, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has shelved the overdue Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) elections for the time being. The minister for Urban development, Nawang Rigzin Jora, however, played safe saying it was not possible to hold ULB elections this year as the state has to elect the new legislative assembly. Jora added that his ministry had no problems in holding the polls but the state government was reluctant. "The government says the ULB elections may disrupt the on-going tourist season," he said adding the elections were postponed last year for similar reasons. Pertinently the ULB elections were scheduled to be held in 2010. Last time the elections were held in 2005 when PDP-Congress ruled the state. It has been reliably learnt that the coalition partners had decided to hold the elections before June 31, 2013 but NC patron, Dr Farooq Abdullah on May 30 last year said the elections would be held only after the tourist season was over. The coalition partners have blamed each other for delaying the polls. The failure of the government to hold the elections has forced the union government to curtail state funds. |
