Jammu, June 8 : To mark World Environment Week celebrations and continuing with the green mission of spreading green awareness about biodiversity and its sustainable economic utilization especially in Biomass rich state of Jammu and Kashmir ,O P Sharma CCF Ecotourism today hosted 191 Tree Talk for Baramulla Degree College students and teachers. Prof Botany Dr Abdul Rashid Malik while extending welcome to tree talk participants highlighted the importance of maple trees in Apiary, Cattle feeding , making of musical instruments and autumn tourism as trees are source of bee forage ,cattle fodder ,tone wood and attraction for tourists in autumnal foliage colours. Forest department need to develop maple nurseries in temperate areas and include maples in plantation programmes, he added. Dr Zafar Khan shared that Botanical gardens act as germplasm banks and it is useful to raise rare endemic plants like Veeri Tethven ,Kasmiri Patrees ,Kaud ,Belladonna for the academic and research work and also for nature education of the college students of various streams during environmental deliberations . Javeed Kakroo known social activist while reflecting on the bee keeping activity highlighted that native blooms like soleyi ,Van gulab ,wopalhaak ,Thuth and exotic flowers like Robinia ,Spartium attract honeybees and act as bee forage for better production of honey.In addition ,bees act as pollinators and without bees ,humans cannot enjoy sweet fruits of nature . O P Sharma Vidyarthi Tree Talk crusader said that Tree Talk has generated mass awareness across cross section of society and educational institutions include Tree Talk as important environmental awareness activity which allows students to interact with nature in the open ,acquaint them with intricate interrelationships between plants and animals. Tree Talk launched on 19th December 2010 from Jammu university has so far held 290 sessions and has generated green consciousness throughout the state of Jammu and Kashmir. |
