Hoax call on e-metering, Jammu sweats | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 8: If the relentless heat waves have made lives of Jammuites miserable, frequent and long power-cuts by the Power Development Department (PDD) are just adding to their woes. As the tall claims of a power-cut free summer in e-metered areas by the government prove hoax, the people in the winter capital of the state are struggling with power curtailments and water supply crisis. Most of the residents complain that despite the assurance by the Power Development Department that metered areas will get regular power, they still had to face frequent power cuts. "Government is only making claims in the name of streamlining the system and scenario is completely different on the ground", said Gul Khan, a resident. The problem is more in the new colonies which were established in and around Jammu in recent years. In Channi Himmat, Gandhi Nagar, Nanak Nagar, Newplot, Rehari frequent power cut has become a routine. "The department is not following its own curtailment schedule and is resorting to unscheduled cuts", Vir Saraf, a resident of Sidhra claimed. A severe heat wave coupled with unbridled power cuts has raised tempers in the Jammu region and led to resentment against the Omar Abdullah government's "step-motherly" treatment to the region. Electricity cuts ranging from 10 to 15 hours have added to the woes of people in the Jammu region, which is witnessing a maximum temperature of around 45 degrees Celsius in some places. City residents said the authorities are not paying heed to their hardships. They also accuse the Omar Abdullah government of discriminating against the region. "The government is discriminatory. Jammu always gets step-motherly treatment. I remember the time when the chief minister dragged the entire power department to Kashmir in winters to restore electricity supply, which was damaged due to snowfall. Extreme summer conditions are worse than cold. Why is he (Omar) not taking any action now?" said Atul Sharma, a post-graduate student of Jammu University. However, the department is expressing its inability to provide regular power supply in view of the shortage in the supply and increasing demand. "It has become necessary to enforce power cuts as the demand is highest in the state during past few one month", Chief Engineer PDD Jammu, Muhammad Qasim said adding, "We have no other option, but to resort to unscheduled cuts". |
