Lashkar div comdr among 2 militants killed | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, June 8: Police and army killed two militants including a divisional commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) during an encounter in a village in South Kashmir's Pulwama district today. Police officials said that the slain divisional commander was involved in number of militancy related incidents in Srinagar and Pulwama districts. Srinagar based spokesman of 15 Corps, Lt Col N N Joshi said that based on specific intelligence, a joint operation was launched by Rashtriya Rifles Unit and SOG, Pulwama in Reshipora village of Pulwama district of South Kashmir, resulting in killing of two hardcore LeT militants. The spokesman said that one AK-47, one Pistol and other warlike stores were recovered from the possession of slain militants. "Information was received at about 4:50 PM today about the presence of two militants in a house at Reshipora, near Kakapora. A joint operation by Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operation Group (SOG) was launched immediately. While the cordon was being laid around the suspected house, militants came out and opened fire on the troops, who immediately took cover and retaliated back," said Lt Col Joshi. The defence spokesman said that one of the militants was killed in the initial gunfight while the other militant took cover and kept on engaging the troops. He said the fire-fight continued till another 30 minutes and troops were able to successfully kill the other militant as well. He said that subsequent search of the site of operation resulted in the recovery of one AK-47, one Pistol and other warlike stores. "The operation was called off at 7:40 PM and bodies of the slain terrorist were handed over to the police. Both the slain militants belonged to LeT and have been identified as Bilal Ahmed Bhat of Lelhar-Kakapora, and Irshad Ahmed Ganai of Larikpora, Awantipora," said Lt Col Joshi. A police spokesman said that police and security forces achieved a major success when it succeeded in eliminating a LeT Divisional Commander Bilal Ahmad Bhat alias Bilal Lelhari. The spokesman said that Bilal was involved in the killing of leading cardiologist Dr. Sheikh Jalal and his two police guards in an attack at Pampore. "Bilal was involved in the killing of two army jawans at Kadalbal and in attack near Silver Star hotel on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. Bilal was also involved in the conspiracy of Hyderpora attack on Army. He was killed along with his associate in an encounter at Reshipora, Pulwama, today," said the police spokesman. The spokesman said that on specific information, Pulwama Police, 50 RR and 183 CRPF launched a cordon and search operation at village Reshipora, Kakapora in Pulwama district, today. The militants present in the village fired on the forces triggering an encounter. Two militants were killed in the encounter. The second slain militant was identified as Mudasir Ahmad Sheikh of Kirkipora Pulwama. In the meantime, police today recovered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) from Rainawari area in Srinagar city. Sources said that people at a seminary (Darasgah) in Naidyar in Rainwari area called police after they found an explosive device inside a room while repairing the building. A police team was immediately rushed to the area and recovered a rusted IED inside the room. A case has been registered and further investigations have been started in this case. |
