As Omar's trusted lieutenants fail, senior Abdullah makes a comeback | Rana, Wani to face axe as provincial presidents | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, June 8: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is nowadays quite perplexed about his political future since he failed to live up to his expectations of his father and National Conference President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah. Omar is at cross roads with no solution in sight. Two of the Omar's trusted lieutenants Devinder Singh Rana and Nasir Aslam Wani failed him as they could not galvanize the support of party workers for the candidates during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Both Rana and Wani were never in contact with the workers at the ground. This resulted into the defeat for the party candidates in the parliamentary elections. Sources told Early Times that grassroots workers of the party were never comfortable with Rana and Wani after they were appointed as provincial heads for Jammu and Kashmir divisions respectively. Both these leaders never commanded respect and the workers taught them a lesson by resorting to cross voting in the parliamentary elections. "Rana and Wani are relatively new entrants to National Conference and giving them key positions did not go well with the party workers. They are not known to the people who matter on ground and who call the shots during the elections. It was due to this reason that the party suffered badly during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections," said sources. Sources said that Omar had business interests with Rana and Wani and it was due to this proximity that they were given top positions in the party. People who offered their blood and sweat for the party were not considered for the top positions and this was not liked by the grassroot workers. "It was only due to the objections raised by these grassroots workers that National Conference President has decided to revamp the party structure. Given the scenario it is quite likely that both Rana and Wani would be shown the door and they would be replaced by some other persons," said sources. It would be in place to mention here that when Omar took over as the chief minister of the state in 2009 he tried his best to clip the wings of Dr. Abdullah's two close aides, Abdul Rahim Rather and Ali Mohammad Sagar. However, Omar received a warning from his father and as such had to drop his plan. Sources said that National Conference President rebuked Omar after the latter offered to resign as chief minister following party's debacle in the recently held parliamentary elections. Dr. Abdullah said that Omar's resignation would not make any difference since the damage has already been done. "Omar's future is uncertain since Dr. Abdullah has already announced that he would be the party's chief ministerial candidate of the party. Since Omar did not opt to fight the parliamentary elections he would be forced to play second fiddle to his father in the assembly elections that are due to be held in October-November this year," said sources. |
