Dehradun fake encounter: Ranbir's father wants death sentence for 17 policemen | | | Agencies
New Delhi, June 9: The father of Ranbir Singh, who was killed in a fake encounter near Dehradun, on Monday said that he was not happy with the court's judgement and may move the High Court. A Delhi court awarded life sentence to all the 17 convicted in the killing 22-year-old MBA graduate Ranbir Singh in a fake encounter near Dehradun in 2009. Ranvinderpal Singh said, "I am not happy with the court's decision. I want them to be sentenced to death. No amount of money will bring my son back. Why has the court asked them to pay a fine?" The prosecution lawyer said that Ranbir's family members will move the higher court and seek death penalty for the 17 convicts. "Life sentence is equally bad because they will stay in jail only. The father wanted them to be hanged but at least some justice has been done. We are looking at the order in detail. We may go to the High Court," said lawyer AT Rao. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in New Delhi also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on the 17 convicts. The 18th convict has been let off as he has already been in jail. Meanwhile, mother of one of the convicted police officer claimed that her son was innocent. She said, "My son is innocent. The judgement is wrong. They have no proof. The judgment is one-sided." Defence lawyer SP Singh Rathore claimed that the court delivered the verict under media pressure. "There is no evidence against us. We will go to the High Court. This has become media trial and the verdict has come under pressure from media," alleged Rathore. In the biggest ever conviction of police personnel in a fake encounter case, the CBI court had found the 17 Uttarakhand policemen guilty of killing a young man. The policemen had killed 22-year-old MBA graduate Ranbir in Dehradun five years back. There were a total of 18 policemen who were being tried in the case and 17 of them were convicted of murder, destruction of evidence and criminal conspiracy. One policeman was found guilty of destruction and fabrication of evidence. The prosecution was able to prove that the encounter site where Ranbir was gunned down was dressed up and the bullets that were fired from an AK-47 rifle were in fact from a police weapon. On July 3, 2009, Ranbir was gunned down by Dehradun Police on charges that he was a part of an extortion racket in Doon valley. A case was first probed by CB-CID and it was later transferred to CBI. The trial was transferred from Dehradun to Delhi following a petition by Ranbir's family. |
