Anantnag, June 9: Scores of structures worth crores including Tourism Reception Centre, State Road Transport Corporation building, Hotel and shops were gutted in a devastating fire that broke out late Monday evening in the Main market area of world famous tourist resort of Pahalgam in this south Kashmir district.
A major fire broke out in the main market engulfing more than a dozen structures of the tourist place. "Tourism Reception Centre, State Road Transport Corporation building, Hotel Purnima, Handicraft shops and others were completely damaged in the blaze," officials said.
However no causality of any kind was reported from the spot while as tourists staying in nearby hotels and restaurants were evacuated safely.
According to locals fire broke out in Hotel Purnima at around 6:30 pm this evening which engulfed the whole market because of the speedy winds. They said that at first instance fire tenders of Phlagam arrived on the spot but failed to control the inferno.
"Few fire tenders arrived on the spot and used the water to control the fire, however they failed with the result flaming market had to wait, till the fire tenders from nearby stations arrived."
A local, Mushtaq Ahmad who was himself present in the spot and was voluntarily rescuing the people told Early Times, adding late arrival of fire tenders and speedy winds resulted massive destruction of the market.
He said that joint efforts of locals, Army and CRPF helped fire and emergency department in dousing and controlling the massive fire.
Locals hailed the efforts of Army and CRPF in dousing the inferno. "Had not army ensured hassle free supply of water through their tankers, it was impossible for fire tenders to control it." A local youth said.
On twitter it is Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who informed rest of the world about the Phalgam inferno and tweeted "A fire has broken out in Pahalgam and has engulfed the Tourist Reception Centre & Hotel Poornima. I've been told both buildings evacuated (sic)"
However, the claims of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of evacuating gutted Tourism Reception Center building were contested by locals who termed the Chief Minister a liar.
"Tourism Reception Center was locked no one was inside it, had anybody of the department present their we could have saved all the records of the department which gutted along with the building." They said, adding due to carelessness of the employees deputed for night officials record of the department also gutted.
The exact reason for the blaze has not yet been ascertained as the concerned officials avoided to attended several calls from this reporter.
