6/9/2014 11:17:21 PM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, June 9: The high altitude Government Housing Colony Ompora in central Kashmir's Budgam district poses a great threat to the life and property as the vested interests in connivance with the district administration extract the earth from below.
Due to its location, Ompora housing colony is risking the life and property worth crores as the land mafia in connivance with the district administration are extracting the earth from below for the duel purposes of selling the soil and to put the land so cleared on sale as residential plots.
According to locals, the residential houses, private school housing around 400 school children and over-head water tank of PHE department have developed cracks due to earth cutting by the land mafia. They said the road linking Ompora colony with the Sheikhpora locality on Srinagar-Budgam road is slithering and the private school building on top has developed cracks and is unsafe.
Residents allege that the district administration was facilitating the land encroachment and it was under the nose of the Deputy Commissioner Budgam that land mafia is extracting soil for commercial purposes in broad-day light risking the life and property of hundreds of inhabitants of the high altitude housing colony. The colony is just 8.3km from Srinagar city and could be reached within 30 minutes. It is near to the Sringar airport.
Being at an altitude whole of Srinagar city can be seen. And it has a scenic beauty from all sides. The colony has a total of 1300 plots of varying sizes ranging in cost from 9.5 lakh to 25 lakh rupees.
But unfortunately there is chaos among the inhabitants-thanks to insensitivity of the district administration. "We approached the district administration several times but in vane as those at the helm of affairs are turning a deaf ear to our plea" a local said.
He said, the inhabitants have now decided to register FIR in police station against the land mafia. "We will take legal recourse as the civil administration seems to be in deep slumber" the local said. Deputy Commissioner, Budgam, Khursheed Shah was not available for comments. About the basic amenities, the locals alleged that the filtration plant is defunct for unknown reasons. "We brought the issue into the notice of Assistant Executive Engineer Budgam who didn't take the issue seriously. There is an apprehension of diseases especially in children due to supply of contaminated water. The Chief Engineer Public Health Engineering is also aware about this problem. But he has not taken any action," they said. Due to its location at an altitude it is difficult to get the underground water. However a well build water treatment plant has been constructed which gets water from a neighboring rivulet. But the earth cutting had made the water reservoir unsafe and it may collapse anytime.
