Abrogation of Art 370 evokes mixed reaction in Kashmir | | | Shakeel A Khan
SRINAGAR, June 9: As the 'abrogation' of Article 370 from Jammu & Kashmir has generated debate across the country people of the Kashmir seem to be divided on this issue with people offering their own point of view but not without logic. Early Times talked to a cross section of people to know their views about the revocation of Article 370. While some people welcomed the move there were others who opposed it. People seem to be divided over the likely consequences if the Article 370 is revoked from the state. "The Kashmir valley is facing huge problem of unemployment. Highly educated youth are sitting idle at their homes since they don't have any jobs to discharge. This problem can be solved as and when the private sector gets encouragement from the people at helm," said Mohammad Zubair, a resident of Anantnag. Zubair said that revocation of Article 370 might encourage the big business houses to come and invest in the Kashmir valley. He said that once investment is done over here then jobs in thousands would be created for the youth and thus the problem of unemployment can be solved once for all. "People with post graduate degrees and even doctorate are forced to work as Rehbar-e-Taleem in the education department. At the end of the month these people are forced to receive few thousand rupees. This is sheer exploitation and discrimination with the highly educated people. This can be ended with the setting up of big business units and same is possible only after abrogation of Article 370," said Imtiyaz Ahmad, a resident of Eidgah. However, on the other side there are people who say Kashmiris would lose their identity if Article 370 is abrogated. These people say that Kashmiris would consider themselves as strangers in their own land once the 'special status' is snatched from them. "People of Kashmir are culturally and socially different from those living in the other parts of India. This differentiation would go once for all as and when the Article 370 is abrogated from the state. Given this situation it would be better that the special status enjoyed by Jammu & Kashmir is not tampered with," said Mohammad Aslam, a resident of Batmaloo. Like Aslam there are many others who think that the value of the land holdings across the state would go on higher scale. They say that the outsiders would purchase property in the state with the state subjects forced to feel the heat once Article 370 is abrogated. |
