Shaking the Sheikh citadel | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 9: Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today said that he shall personally go to every block. He was addressing party workers at the Nawa-e-Subh complex where Ali Mohammad Sagar was appointed as the general secretary of the party. The Chief Minister, however, did not say whether he will reach out to his workers in various blocks through twitter or go there physically. Omar, however, has a problem. Most of the NC workers are not acquainted with the social media and those who are cannot do much during the forthcoming legislative Assembly elections. He, therefore, has to go to the workers in blocks personally. Hectic schedule indeed but then there is no choice. His grandfather took people for a ride and so did his father for a while. But the people in Kashmir have `matured' now. They have rejected the Sheikhdom during the Parliamentary elections and a repeat of the verdict during Assembly polls may wipe out the eight-decade-old organization. Not only Omar, Farooq too has to go to the people and at the same time refrain from dancing and silly comments. The people seem in no mood to take more of his `musings'. The father, son duo was finally forced to sack a member of the Sheikh Family, Sheikh Nazir. Ali Mohammad Sagar has taken over as the general secretary of the organization. Nazir was used as a poster boy by the NC leadership three years ago when it kick started its membership campaign from Budgam district. Nazir, it may be mentioned commands respect from various quarters for his `separatist' tendencies. But now the situation has changed. The NC has reached a point where it felt the need of sacrificing a member of the Sheikh Family to resurrect the organization but can Sagar play Jesus? The appointment of Sagar as general Secretary must have shocked provincial president for Jammu, Devender Rana who did not like him (Sagar) and had almost succeeded in persuading Omar to show door to Sagar during the 2010 agitation. |
