Historic Ranbir canal offers respite to Jammuites from blistering sun

Jammu, June 10: As mercury inches its way up in the city, Jammuites feeling itched over the sweltering heat are turning to the historic Ranbir Canal to beat the heat by taking a dip in the cold water of the Chenab.
Historic Ranbir Canal since after its completion in 1905, after takes off from left of Chenab River up-stream Akhnoor Bridge has been offering a 'serene picnic spot' to jammuites in summers that too within city limits.
And canal is still being swarmed by scores of youngsters and locals residents daily to enjoy its cool environs till today. The day long Power cut in the Jammu city has fueled the problems of the Jammuites in the blazing heat; People were sitting on the bank of Ranbir Canal whole day to get some relief.
A severe heat wave coupled with long power cuts has raised tempers in the Jammu region and led to resentment against Power development department of the state. Prolonged power curtailments have added to the woes of people in the Jammu region, which is witnessing the temperature touching over 40 degrees and this canal and its distributaries are no less than a boon for the locals to get respite from the scorching heat
The rising mercury, summer vacations and the power curtailments in the Jammu have forced the local populace to turn towards historic Ranbir Canal and its by-channels in adjoining areas.
The canal head at Brigadier Rajinder Singh Memorial Park, Satwari (Nai Basti) and other places from this historic canal meanders through under irrigation plan but all such places have become lively with hustle bustle like Chopatti of Mumbai. People from the city pour towards the cool waters of the canals while some even dare to ride up to the Akhnoor to have a leisure time on the western bank of the River Chenab. The heavy rush of the daily visitors to the canal has also attracted the local vendors who make good harvest of this short picnic by the Jammuities and stalls of paani puri (golgappas), watermelon and ice-cream seen swarming around the customers. "Locals and tourist staying in Hotels at Jewel and General Bus Stand throng to canal hardly the sun goes down, said Ram Lal a water melon vendor and claimed a brisk business at late evenings at canal head.
Water jumpers at times are seen bathing in sun to maintain their body temperature, while some new comers seem to be dependent on the tyre tubes.
Not only the water surfers seem to enjoy the cool ripples of water but some aged people were also seen picking up their share from this merriment by dipping their feet in the cool moving waters of canal looking at the dipping sun in the West within crimson red auroras on the horizon.
The number of visitors is high in the late hours of the evening that one finds to park a vehicle in the huge rush. Not only the road side vendors but the tuck shops besides the canal heads also are making a good business. The shops just below the Bakshinagar-Shaktinagar Pulli attract big crowds in the evening people from all around the city come to this place to have the cool bites of ice cream at famous Pawan Ice Cream Corner.
