Omar makes Iqbal churn in grave | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 10: Allama Iqbal must have taken some painful churns in his grave today when Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah quoted one of his famous verses while addressing people at Khag, Beerwah and Magam. "Surat-e-shamsheer hai dastey qaza main woh qoum ----- Karti hai jo har zaman apney amal ka hisaab." This verse is not meant for people who believe in electoral politics, or to put it plainly who play petty politics. Anyway, Iqbal has been widely misunderstood especially in the sub-continent and Omar's `sin' is not, therefore, unpardonable. Iqbal will not lose his greatness if petty politicians use his poetry for their cheap goals. Omar also quoted another verse to justify NC's total rout in the just concluded Parliamentary elections. "Girtay hain shehsawar hi maindaan jung main Woh tifal kya giray jo gutnoo kay bal chalay." (Only riders fall in the battle field, those who crawl cannot fall.) But who was responsible for the fall this time? Was it the horse or the rider or both? Omar said that `enemies' have always united to defeat the National Conference. Again Omar is right. But did the organisation learn any lesson from history. Sher-e-Kashmir called Congress `worms of the gutter' and called for their social boycott. The impact of the boycott was so severe that the Congress workers were totally isolated across Kashmir. But then came a time when he assumed power with their support. Similarly, Dr Farooq took cudgels with Indira Gandhi. His workers showed their anger by lowering down their pants while she was addressing people at erstwhile Hazuri Bagh (now Iqbal Park). But after losing power to his brother -in-law, he forged an alliance with Rajiv Gandhi and spilled disaster for the state by rigging the 1987 elections. NC later forged alliance with the BJP but shook hands with the most `detested' foe to stay in power a few years later. But the foe turned friend accused him of mistrust and misgovernacne during the 2010 agitation. Omar fired his paper missiles like the Public Service Guarantee Act, panchayat elections and the RTI act. He also said that NC was the only organisation whose benchmark is public service. However, reports from the ground belie these claims. Dilapidated roads and drains across the state, faulty distribution of ration, fractured healthcare , corruption, scams, persecution and discrimination has been the hallmark of this rule. |
