Despite achievements, athletes suffer for corruption, lawlessness | | | Javaid Naikoo
Srinagar, June 11: Despite bringing laurels at local, national and international levels, athletes of Kashmir suffer due to prevailing corruption and lawlessness in sports hierarchy from top to bottom. Suhail Ahmad Teli and Faizan Ayub Khan of Shopian who recently won two gold medals in an event organized by 'international sqay federation' namely Kashmir martial art training programme' held in Pahalgam Kashmir while talking to Early Times said that despite tremendous achievements over the years in many competitions held at local, national and international level concerned department dealing with sqay games in Kashmir always show them cold shoulders instead of anykind of help. "On one hand I feel proud that I won a gold medal in an international competition , but on other hand I my friends who participated in the said event felt ashamed to compare ourselves with the athletes who had come from outside Kashmir only because they had every kind facility available and whatever we required including Bus fare we have to mange from our pockets, " said gold medalist Suhail Tahir Hussain who trains youth in his academy says that he always has manage everything on his own to fulfill the wishes of his students to participate in local, national and international sqay and martial art events and never ever any member of concerned government department dealing with martial section of sports despite repeated requests provided them any kind of help. "Wining gold medals in Pahalgam event is not first of its kind of achievement my students had scored, besides having won dozens of gold medals in many local and national events over the years my two students namely Hamid Rasheed and Faisal Yousuf also won gold medals in an international martial event in Nepal and that time too after feeling fed up of prevailing corrupt system of government I had to manage all expenses on my own."Said academy head Tahir Hussain Martial art and sqay games players while ridiculing government sports infrastructure of Kashmir said that 'prevailing government infrastructure is in no way helpful for athletes' as according to them system is completely in the hands of corrupt officials who instead of helping talented athletes always discourage them by showing negative response every time contacted for assistance. |
