Congress to shun old conventions, may declare poll candidates early | Strategy to regain lost ground | | Kunal Shrivatsa
JAMMU, June 11: In a bid to revive its sagging fortunes in the state after the drubbing it received in the parliamentary polls, the Congress leadership in J&K is likely to undertake certain initiatives which are not akin to the traditions and nature of the grand old party of the country. Reliable sources within Congress told Early Times that following party's poor showing in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, the party hierarchy which include Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Prof Saif-ud-din Soz and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad held separate interactions with the grass root level workers to get feedback on the reasons of party's debacle in the state. Sources further said that both Soz and Azad during their interface with the party workers understood the consequences which party might face in the next Assembly elections, which could be held any time in October or November, if it fails to mend its ways soon. "Both leaders came across some harsh realities which led to party's disastrous performance where even Azad himself had to face a unthinkable defeat," said sources. If sources are to be believed, Congress is all set to do away with the past practice of declaring the party candidates only when elections are round the corner and is seriously contemplating a move to announce candidates for the ensuing Assembly elections. "Sensing the mood of the party activists as well as a large number of leaders, Congress might announce the names of party candidates for the next assembly polls well in advance…The state Congress leadership has realized that in order to put up a better performance in the forthcoming Assembly elections, it has to think out of the box and do away with its old conventions which have lost relevance in the changed political scenario," said sources. "Congress will set a new precedent of naming the party candidates for the assembly polls much earlier in order to give contestants a fair chance of getting themselves acquainted with the voters while it will also give them ample time for electioneering," added sources. According to sources, another reason attributed to this change of approach is to stem the rot of rebellion from other aspirants within the party. "Last minute announcements give rise to a major problem of jumping into fray of rebel candidates, who hugely dent the prospects of official nominees," said sources. Sources further informed that candidates for few seats in Jammu region are almost finalized and soon contenders for other constituencies will also be shortlisted. "The party has more or less approved the candidates from six constituencies of erstwhile Doda district while it has also given its go ahead for the names to contest from Reasi, Darhal, Nowshera and Kalakote assembly segments… Other segments will be decided shortly," sources maintained.
