Supply of contaminated water rued | | | Bivek Mathur JAMMU, June 12: Despite protests and complaints against officials of the erring PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Department, the drinking water supply scenario in old city has remained unchanged. The residents have been up in arms against the poor quality of water being supplied and there has been wide spread resentment against the PHE authorities. Several pictures of the drinking water being supplied in the city indicate that the water is highly contaminated and not potable. Chief Engineer, PHE Department, Jammu, Sushil Aima held ongoing digging work in Jammu responsible for the contaminated water and assured immediate intimation to the concerned official to find out a plan to sort out the problems being faced by the residents immediately. Pertinently, numbers of surveys which have been conducted in the past have shown that a chunk of state population is still provided untreated and contaminated water in Jammu by the PHE Department especially the Government schools in the rural belt and Government Medical College and its associated Hospitals in the urban belt of Jammu province. Nearly half the schools and 30% of the villages in Jammu and Kashmir are relying on unsafe drinking water, a study has revealed. The study conducted by the national level monitoring agency, under the Union Rural Development Ministry, has also found that nearly two-thirds of the villagers do not get sufficient potable water in their homes. |
