Omar proposes, Ministers dispose

SRINAGAR, June 12: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's directions to his Cabinet colleagues and bureaucrats fall on deaf ears as in majority of the cases no heed whatsoever is paid to the problems of the people who visit Ministers and bureaucrats for the redressal of the problems.
Minister of State (independent charge) for Industries and Commerce, Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo paid no attention to direction of Omar to listen to the problems of Pashmina artisans who called on him on Wednesday in connection with problems being faced by them. Kichloo even did not have time to make the delegation of Pashmina artisans to wait so that the problems are discussed.
The delegation members while sharing views with Early Times said that Kichloo told them since a delegation from Kishtwar has come to meet him they should leave his office. The delegation members said that Kichloo said that he has no time to listen to their grievances and that they should leave at the earliest.
"We had earlier met the Chief Minister who assured of swift action with respect to our demands. He asked us to visit the Industries and Commerce Minister since the issue falls within his domain. It was only after this that we visited the said Minister, but were disheartened given his indifferent attitude," said the delegation.
The Pashmina artisans said the glaring problem being faced by them is the continuation of operation of power looms in different parts of Kashmir valley. The artisans said that majority of these power looms function in the downtown areas of Srinagar city.
"Around 50 power looms are operating in the Kashmir valley. Although raids were carried out on some of these power looms in the past one week but none among them has been sealed so far. Given the indifferent attitude of Industries and Commerce Minister it seems that Government has surrendered before the power loom owners. This would virtually wipe out the Pashmina industry from Kashmir," said the Pashmina artisans.
In the meantime, Director Industries and Commerce, Nazim Zai Khan faced an embarrassing situation when he was confronted by one of the power looms owners during a raid. Nazim had gone to carry out a raid on the power loom but had to leave midway after facing hostile attitude from the owner along with his employees.
Sources said that as soon as Director Industries and Commerce reached premises of Misgar Power Loom at Bagh Ali Mardan Khan, Nowshera, the loom owner along with employees asked him to mend his ways. Nazim was asked about the order that authorizes him to carry out raid and then act against the power loom owners.
"Without uttering a single word the Director Industries and Commerce left the venue without taking any action against the violators of law. He later on said that he would compile a report about the development and submit it to the higher authorities," said sources.
It would be in place to mention here that even if raids were carried out on some power looms by the authorities over the past one week or so, none of these looms have been stopped from functioning. This is despite the fact that these looms have brought disrepute to the Pashmina trade of Kashmir.
