Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 14: Senior NC leader, Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal has stated that the Congress acted like leeches on the body of National Conference while blaming the Congress unit in Jammu and Kashmir for the defeat of the NC candidates in the three Lok Sabha constituencies in the Kashmir valley.
There are about 650 types of leeches in the world and Dr Kamaal has not clarified which specie of leeches had sucked blood, possibly impure blood, from the body of the National Conference. Leeches live in fresh water, others live in marshes and yet others survive on damp land. The Congress leeches that had kept on sucking blood from the NC body were from the wetland, or from the marshes or from the fresh water lakes. Better for Kamaal to explain which sort of leeches had been sucking blood from the NC body, if not from its soul.
In fact Kamaal had been peeved over the way the PCC chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz and Ghulam Nabi Azad had ruled out the possibility of any pre-poll alliance with the National Conference during the ensuing Assembly election. Not that Kamaal had been keen on forging a pre-poll alliance with the state unit of the Congress his anger was over the statement from Soz in which he had said that the Congress lost all three Lok Sabha seats, two in the Jammu region and one in Ladakh, because of anger of people against the NC.
Kamaal had felt enraged over Azad's statement that the Congress had healthy alliance with the PDP. If Kamaal and Dr Farooq had felt enraged over Soz they had a cause because Soz has claimed that the Congress lost the three Lok Sabha seats from the state because of the mistakes committed by the NC. Does this mean that the Congress had not committed any blunders ? Had it been the case people should have voted for the Congress candidates.
What seems to be amazing and intriguing is the way Mustafa Kamaal made a U-turn, that too immediately, while commenting on the possibilities of forming a coalition Government in alliance with the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir. Kamaal has ruled out any possibility for forging a pre-poll alliance with the Congress during the ensuing Assembly election. He, at the same time, does not rule out the possibility of framing a coalition Government in alliance with the Congress.
As senior party leader Kamaal has explained the rationale behind his contradictory statement. If on one hand he equates Congress to leeches that feed on the blood of human beings and animals, on the other he keeps the option open for forging a coalition Government with the Congress. The NC leadership is trying to win a simple majority in the 87-member Assembly but, as is expected, if it fails to do so it has no other alternative for retaining power except for forming a coalition Government in alliance with the Congress.
Yes, the Congress has another option. It can form a Government in alliance with the PDP if it does not want to feed on the blood of National Conference. Well one should not feel surprised if the Congress forms a coalition Government with the NC after the Assembly poll.
In politics there are no permanent enemies or permanent friends. Yes, PDP and the NC are an exception to this rule as the Congress and the BJP or the Samajwadi Party and the BSP or the AIDMK and the DMK are exception to the rule. The NC and the PDP travel on parallel lines and there is no meeting ground between the two as there is none between the Congress and the BJP or between the DMK and the AIDMK or between the SP and the BSP.
The National Conference forming a Government in alliance with the Congress which, the NC considers, is like leeches cannot be treated as an impossibility. The Congress forming the Government in alliance with the NC which the Congress considers as the main architect for the defeat of the Congress in the Lok Sabha election in the regions of Jammu and Ladakh. Such equations and divisions can happen only in politics of convenience or compulsion and not politics of conviction.
A senior Congress leader has a nice comment to offer on Kamaal's statement in which he equated Congress with leeches. The Congress leader says that usually leeches were used by Hakims for sucking impure blood from a human body. These leeches were used by Hakims for treating various ailments because they believed that once all impurities were sucked out of one's body the human being is back to normal state of existence.
This way, according to the Congress leader, Kamaal and his party colleagues should be grateful to the Congress for having sucked impurities from the body of the National Conference.
Well all these epithets, all these adjectives and all these similes are used by politicians to woo voters. Nothing more. Nothing less than this. It is all part of the power play. A play that helps one to retain power and the other to regain power.
